Just because fanfiction is typically a hobby, doesn't mean it has to suck. I'll still tell a writer what I think they are doing right and what they can do to make it better. How much I emphasize and go into those things does depend upon how much time and effort the writer puts into their work. If it's really just a hobby they do when they are bored, then I won't put as much into my explaination. But some people work for hours to horn their fanfiction skill for one reason or another, and those are the people I especially want to improve and get better. People just draw, play soccer, and tap dance too. They do that because they love it and most of them want to improve. And that's why I critique other people's writing.

I'm not expecting the fanfics to be as good as published works. Published works have been looked at by professionals and you are meant to pay for them so I expect quality. When a fanfic writer goes above and beyond, that's their passion showing through for what they do and I want to help them do that. I went in a bit of a rapid in multiple directions so I hope my point got across somewhere.
