That sounds kinda awesome. I could be remembering things wrong, but aren't Arnold's parents gone/dead or something?

I wonder though, if they had previously been dating before Arnold left for ADVENTURE, why not send him the love letters? Odd that nick found it dark, sounds really mushy and possibly funny. Helga's mother always cracked me up.

His parents left for a fictional South American country called San Lorez to help the Green-eyed People when he was a baby and never came back. No one ever found the bodies so the creator was planning a movie where Arnold's class went to the Jungle and they found his parents. Helga and Arnold also got together during the movie.

I think they found it dark because Helga's home life was really messed up (the episode where Helga sees that therapist - The Couch I think? made a ton of people cry when they saw it) and it probably just got worse as she got older. I doubt Miriam and Bob became more attentive parents.

Ahhh okay, I totally didn't remember that so well ahahah.

That therapist episode is easily my favorite! I assume Miriam and Bob only become more negligent as Helga grows older, and honestly I would have been so much more interesting. D: But now I can see why it would be too dark for Nick. Still, everyone loves dysfunctional families in shows, even kids! At least I did.

Now I'm really sad this spin off never came to be. :(

I'm pretty sure the last episode they ever made was Arnold finding a map in his dad's journal about how to find the Green-eyed People. I can only assume it was supposed to be the lead-up to the Jungle Movie.

Oh don't get me wrong I would have love to have seen that as a kid (and eve more-so now!). But I can see why Nick freaked out. Making Helga's home life more explicit could have been too much for them.

I don't know if you're involved or not, but there's a really great fandom on lj and fanfic.net. I actually got involved in it after the last HA story was posted and I've found a lot of great stories. If you're interested I'd be happy to provide some links :)

I haven't ever gotten into the Hey Arnold! fandoms or comms, but I'd love to take a look! I've been re-watching the show from time to time ever since they added the seasons on Netflix. :) I'd love to hear more about any info on The Patakis or even just discussion in general! :D

The sequel "Sophomores" is currently being written and is already 25 chapters in. Warnings- both this story and the sequel deal with rape, and the aftermath of rape with several characters and seeing quite a bit of the attacker himself. I didn't find it triggering but some might.

Summary - "He liked the way she sighed, though it was a sigh that was reserved for a person who wasn't him and never would be. Warnings -It's rated M for stalking, voyeurism, and some-what explicit sexual acts.
The last two are written by the same author and I pretty much recommend whatever she writes.

I'll stop now but I found almost all of these just by poking around the Pit so they're definitely out there if you look a bit.

Oh wowww, thank you for all the links! This is going to sound weird for someone who lurks/occasionally comments in a place like F!S, but I honestly haven't read a fanfic since probably 2002. It was some awful invader zim fic with mary sues galore. I'll have to give some of these a read though! I'm gonna start reading through the ship_manifesto post now. :) Thank you for providing so much though! This is certainly a nice welcome into a possibly new fandom of mine!

I actually think they were planning on making her home life slightly better? I think Miriam was going to be recovering from her alcoholism at least. And Olga was going to have moved back home?

I'm sure her family still would have been dysfunctional/neglectful, but I don't think they wanted it to be THAT grim. XD

That would make sense. Her home life was seriously messed up and entire show with it being like that would have been way too much for a kids show.

Somewhat random, but where's your icon from? Was it part of the opening credits? I can't place where/what episode it's from and it's driving me nuts! XD

I think the Patakis was originally planned as not-a-kid's show so obviously they could still deal with some of the darker themes. I think they were thinking of putting it on Nick @ Nite? But it probably would have stuck out weird though since N@N used to be mostly made up of older tv shows. The other option was MTV since I believe they're owned by the same company Nick is, but was rejected on the basis that it was too similar in tone to Daria.

I used to be really bummed about it, but IDK. I feel like, without Arnold, the stories would have become too cynical? And I don't think a show steeped in cynicism is really up my alley.

Times like this are when I'm glad fandom exists. Otherwise I'd be unspeakably depressed right now.
I think it would have been okay because we would have gotten all of Arnold's letters to Helga which would have helped keep things light. And Phoebe of course!
