I'm sure you didn't mean to, but you came across as a bit condescending. I'm sure the OP knows it is possible to become a man. It sounds as if you're writing it off as something easy to do, like it didn't involve years of therapy and money. It might not even be allowed in OP's country or maybe the OP is afraid to be shunned by society and family. I'm sure you were trying to be comforting, the phrasing and your choice of words made it sound like you're trivializing a very serious matter.

Well, that definitely wasn't my intention. I may not know all the details, but I know that it costs thousands of dollars worth of surgeries. And I didn't know that gender reassignment surgery was illegal in other countries. Which ones is it illegal in?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_by_country_or_territory This is a good place to start. I would also like to point out that in Sweden, sterilization(!) and divorce are necessery for legal gender change. Pffft, just goes to show how far we still have to go...
