There is no truly unselfish reason to donate to a cause. You are always, in the end, ultimately doing it for some personal gain -- even if that gain is simply feeling good about what you've done, or appearing "humble" to an outside party.

Additionally, while it is fine and dandy to be concerned about "everyone in general" and the "average public citizen," it is impossible to help everyone. You ultimately have to choose, and that choice is usually going to be informed by some personal belief or attachment.

Daaaaamn, are you a cynic.

They're just realistic.

Re: For everyone wondering:

It's not cynicism; it's realism. If I were a cynic, then I'd be using this point to argue against any sort of activism. On the contrary, it allows me to appreciate the positive fruits of activism regardless of the initial motivation of the activist.

Re: For everyone wondering:

It's not realism; it's a position called ethical egoism and there is literally no way to argue against it because, like Freudian 'denial' they can always say, "Well, you say you're doing it for this reason but REALLY it's for personal gain." It's one of the most frustrating positions you can take on matters of ethics and it's also (in my opinion) bullshit.

Haven't got time to argue over this, it just annoys me when people say this position is 'realism' when it's really not; it's not accepted as fact at all.

I'd say that one could argue against it if the person with whom one is arguing is open to the possibility of being wrong. So, if you happen to have the time and feel so inclined, would you mind explaining why you think it's bullshit?

That's not cynicism. It's just how human nature works.

Nope, that's the truth.
The really disgusting thing is that people are actually criticizing other people's acts of charity because doing that makes them feel better about themselves.

Re: For everyone wondering:

I came here to say this. The truth is, no one has to help anyone. I think it's great when people do, but everyone is going to have their own motivations for doing so. You have to way that against the good it does.

Re: For everyone wondering:

This is pretty much what I wanted to say.

You ultimately have to choose, and that choice is usually going to be informed by some personal belief or attachment.

This. Pretty much the only way to be "fair" is to not give anyone any money at all. Which defeats the point of the whole "charity" thing.
