Frankly, I'd care because it'd be really great to NOT have another Chernobyl. I'm a little disappointed that when talking about this, people are sort of forgetting about the super-hot uranium rods that could release radiation into a densely populated area via the groundwater if the irradiated water leaks out of the plant. (Yes, I know that none of the money is going to really help with that aspect. But money IS going to help evacuate people from affected areas as needed)

The "For Anyone Wondering" Anon brings up some interestingly consequentialist points about how one should care about all humanity. But arguably, caring about Japan can (but may not for some people) translate into a general compassion for all humanity since a nuclear meltdown will, no doubt, affect millions of people and the global economy. Suggestion to that anon (an actual suggestion, not a slam) : You might enjoy the writings of Bentham since I'm pretty certain he expanded on consequentialism greatly if not outright invented it.

To the anon who posted this secret: Haters gonna hate. Keep up the good deeds.

Huh? The international news of late has been talking about nothing but the nuclear problem, to the detriment of the people who are homeless and sick and missing.

[identity profile] saathiray.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! But I'm not really seeing it come up in Internet discussions. Maybe it's just assumed that everyone knows about it? It's just weird for someone not to mention the nuclear problem. Does that make sense? I don't mean to place a greater emphasis on one part of the tragedy over another. Not a single person would have in earnest imagined a earthquake followed by a tsunami followed by a nuclear disaster. But for anyone who wonders why the big outpouring for Japan and not other places...dude, nuclear power is scary. It may not be right, but it's understandable.

Anyways, I've probably blathered enough. I hope that makes the point clear.

Stop this. Stop watching the damn American media comparing Fukushima to Chernobyl. It's because of all the misinformation that many of my friends in my exchange program got sent back home even though we're 250 miles away from Fukushima. Because of modern designs, though even Fukushima is outdated, it is nowhere NEAR as faulty as the Chernobyl plant.

Seriously, this whole thing has really pissed me off. People are panicking IN AMERICA. People were even buying iodine tablets in CALIFORNIA. I think Americans, no, people in general just LOVE drama, so they bite at this OMFG NUCLEAR MELTDOWN opportunity. I read somewhere recently that this whole tsunami/nuclear power plant thing has given CNN it's highest ratings since the 2010 election.

If you want a reliable news feed, use this: http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/japan_nuclear_crisis/

Here's a great, simplified version of the current situation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sakN2hSVxA

And another thing, check multiple news sources and experts before you go off spouting about Chernobyl this and that. This is nothing like that situation at all. Please.

It's not even the same type of reactor as Chernobyl, is it?

[identity profile] saathiray.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Whoever you are, thanks! I do know that nuclear power is scary in general is the panic is a *potential* Chernobyl. If anything, this is more like Three Mile Island which was bad but not nearly so. Still, I appreciate you giving me these links and information, and I apologize for the offense.
