RPS AU is the only form of RPS I can read. The non AU stuff just squicks me out. AU RPS I can pretend is just original fic with a set group of characters, it doesn't have any bearing on reality at all. Not the the non AU stuff is either but I know too many tinhats who think that is is real and it puts a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't think that's what they meant; so many people think AU RPF is original fic when really it isn't. It does still rely on characterization, just like any AU. However, some people read more for the settings and the environment than the characters themselves, so they don't really get AUs of any kind, and RPF ones in particular. And then some people have a problem with RPF not because they're squicked by it but because they can't understand how a writer or a fandom can build a character out of appearances, interviews and the like.

To each his own, really; I just wish people would stop putting down what they don't like/don't get.

Also, can I just say, I always enjoy reading your responses. They are very well thought out, and even when it's a point I normally don't agree with, you argue it in a way that I can understand where people are coming from. Just genuinely enjoy reading them haha.

It took me forever to get into reading RPF because I couldn't imagine it being done in a way that is both realistic and interesting (I guess the conflicts of ordinary people couched in celebrity privilege just didn't appeal to me?) I have since read many RPF fics of several genres, but I can see why some might be more interested in AUs where they are characters in very different roles.
