Does anyone know where these stunning drawings are from?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to know that, too!

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
In particular, no, but I can recommend you Arthur Rackham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Rackham), who draws in a similar style.

I think I recognize them from here: http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/illustrations/index.html -- lots of good fairy tale illustrations.

This is my absolutely favorite secret now! =D

I know how you fell OP, I know...

A-fucking-MEN!

I'm tired of people saying that women shouldn't hope for a fairy tale ending because it's "not realistic" or "anti-feminist" or some such bullshit.

You can be a perfectly independent, competent, self-respecting, pro-active woman and still want to find the person out there that's perfect for you and live happily ever after.

...at the age of 18 (preferably) without trying, just leaving your room.

PS No, I'm not srcastic here. That's my true wish. Huh. =(

Fucking word *high fives*.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was older than you, I met my husband. He fits this description (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=white%20knight%20syndrome) nicely. Life is interesting. He truly is my hero, and we love each other more than words can say. I'm very spoiled by him and honestly, I think that is justice in action. My life before was very very hard. Life didn't become perfect after J., but it did become much better and I much happier.

I have to agree with Schmendrick from The Last Unicorn, though -

"There are no happy endings, because nothing ever ends."

Life is a continual adventure.

Another thing, J. is not perfect. He's not ugly as sin, but he's not particularly attractive. He has fought depression for as long as I've known him. He is ridiculously overprotective of me, seeing me as more fragile than I am - in his defensive, I am disabled - and he is also overprotective of our children.

I don't know what exactly defines a fairy tale "ending" for you. Kind men who love their loves more than life itself are out there, though.

And I don't consider this anti-feminist. I think our four daughters are being raised to have high standards in partners, and I think our son is being raised to have the same high standards. The genders of their parents are a coincidence. I so happen to be a disabled female who values comfort in a relationship, and J. so happens to be a protective providing male. It's not anti-feminist for a female to want what she wants.

Oh dear. I'm sorry about that HTML slip.

And the word choice slip. Defense, not defensive. I'll quit editing now.

This made me smile. Cx

[identity profile] cowshed.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You and me both, OP! <3

[identity profile] fictionalbf.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely, anon.

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I want to believe that it's possible to have things work out, and that it's possible to be truly happy, and to have your happily-ever-after, and while I know that there will be tears, and you will have to work for it, I still want to believe that it's possible to be able to look back at your life and really, truly be happy.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's anti-feminist or anything, but I do think it's kinda naive and that you're setting yourself up for possible disappointment.

[identity profile] ceruleansan.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
So are most CEO wannabes. Moreso actually. I think people are just bitter about love.

Wait, which fairy tales are we talking about though?

Disney fairy tales, in which everything works out perfectly and no one gets really hurt, which I also want, rational romantic that I am...

Or real folk/fairy tales in which a girl is inevitably raped or physically maimed before the "happy" end (since that's why their Fae tales. The Fae suck).

If it's the latter, than yes, I think you're crazy and kinda masochistic.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
There are all kinds of fairy tales OP. Some are pretty anti-feminist, sure, but some involve proactive female subjects worthy of any feminist literature.

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I loved fairytales growing up. Not just because of the fantasy aspect but because they were usually stories that featured women and were about women and probably first told by women to each other therefore making them for women.
yes some stories have problamatic themes and characters but it was nice to see stories about women endure throughout the centuries in a lot of sexist societies.

[identity profile] acksed.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I want my one true love too, but I'm afraid to launch into full-on courtly behaviour because I'm not sure how it would be received. Politeness, formality and utmost respect for the lady's desires are often mistaken for disinterest, not to mention the stigma attached to 'nice guys'.
