Podfics? Or listen to some good audiobooks read by the actors until you can hear their voices in your head?

(but I'm still giggling at the thought of someone like, oh, Snape, with a teenaged girl voice moan, sorry, OP!)

Get audiobooks. I used to have the same issue until I started listening to audiobooks (also the radio recordings of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Once I had these varied voices in my head, I could go back and read in their voices. Eventually it lead to me being able to come up with unique voices in other books, even though I'd never listened to the audiobooks for them. :)

I inadvertently did that to myself and it only partly worked. I ended up with my childhood favourite author (who narrated most of his own audiobooks) narrating everything I read in my head for a couple of days. His voice is admittedly very pleasant, but considering what else I read, this was disturbing.

...Huh. I just realized that I do, in fact, have different head-reading-voices for different characters /never thought about this before derp

Hey yeah! Mental voice casting diversity, high-five! \o

[identity profile] luxis-lil.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I do that sometimes. Whatever works, I say!

What the... what the fuck?!

Who is that in that picture? It looks exactly like me! A slightly photoshopped version of me, anyway, because my skin isn't that tan, but still. It's creeping me oooouuuuut

...I ship you two now. :|

I'VE BEEN SHIPPED

I must write about this in my diary!

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, OP; I have to make a concentrated effort to recall what a character's voice actually sounds like and try to connect it to the text, and even then it really only works for a short time. :/

I'm assuming you're talking about fanfiction for series where there are canon voices for the characters. Some of the comments here about audiobooks make me think I might have understood you wrong...

Huh. Usually the only voice I have that's consistently "me" is the narrator's voice- but sometimes if I've been listening to someone else talk in real life (or watching a tv series) for a while before reading, I'll get their voice for a while. Which isn't fun when that someone is, say, the teacher who kept you for detention. I'd say I've got sort of a stock cast of "voice actors" in my head- the flamboyant voice, the timid voice, the obnoxious voice etc- that if I thought about it are probably a combination of the voices of real people that are similar and actors I see in those roles.
Not sure if it helps you, OP, but it was kind of fun to think about!

I have to make an effort to read things in an accent other than my own. I don't have a problem reading male dialogue in a male voice, but if I don't actually pay attention to it, everyone "speaks" in a Upper Midwestern US accent.
