Uh, really? Even if those beliefs are anti-gay, anti-woman, and all those other things? Not that every Christian is, but "no matter what" is ... no. No.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
well then why not smear all christians/moslems/jews/whatever with the same "those people" brush? because that's exactly what you're doing here.

pot, meet kettle

You ignored the part where I just said not every Christian is like that, right? ;)

I was only questioning the brush the poster was using, that *every belief is cool and you should be comfortable with it.* No.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, true. my bad. i understand what you are saying.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Np, I get where the knee-jerk anger is coming from. :)

You deserve to feel comfortable with your beliefs! They don't give you a right to smack other people around, or shove what you feel down someone's throat, but what you believe is between you and God, and if you're not allowed to be comfortable with that, then there's a problem. People should be allowed to discuss with you the pros and cons of whatever religion you have, but no one has the right to make you feel uncomfortable for what you believe.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Er so if someone's God said they should be murderering people, anyone who believes it should be comfortable with that? They have a *right* to be comfortable, but I can't agree that they *should* be perfectly fine with this.

"no one has the right to make you feel uncomfortable for what you believe"

Actually, they do. It's called free speech. You have the right to speak whatever beliefs you hold, and others have the right to tell you that no, maybe murdering people is bad.

Examples are extreme ofc, but the poster did say *any* belief.

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
In the case of extreme examples like murder/etc., then I stand with what I said before: You have a right to believe it, but you do not have the right to hurt anyone else. You don't have a right to do anything to anyone else that could hurt them. That's something that isn't just religion, it applies for everything.

People can say things that make you feel uncomfortable, I agree. Perhaps what I should have said is that no one should antagonise you or attack you because of what you believe. I'm all in support of non-antagonising, respectable discussions where both people treat each other with basic courtesy. If the result of something like that is that you feel uncomfortable with your beliefs, then I think that that's a different issue. But if you feel uncomfortable to go out into the world and have those beliefs, or to say "I hold X belief" because you're afraid of what others will do to you, or because you're afraid of being hurt because of it, I believe that's a problem.

As long as you are not attacking someone else, you should be able to feel safe and comfortable in society, regardless of your belief.

Well, my church has a female priest married to her girlfriend :)
