Except not every Christian does that. Nor does all of Christianity call for it.

I say this as a nonreligious person.

Anon I replied to said "fundamentalist".

Also, see my point about other Christians, those wonderful "good" Christians everyone's going on about, calling out the shitty behavior of those they supposedly share a religion with. If they don't shout that shit down, what good are they?

Fortunately, there are plenty of us who do.

THIS however, I do agree with. Religion will never change for the better if those tolerant individuals don't stand up and say that they are no longer going to put up with the shit that their fellow Christians/Muslims/Hindus/Whatever are doling out to others.

But I think you underestimate the amount of people who are tolerant within their religions that DO stand up and say, "That's enough." to all the hateful doctrine that many people put out. Have you heard of Islamic feminism or perhaps this website: www.feministmormonhousewives.org?

Don't tell me that all tolerant religious people don't stand up and call out the shitty behavior that happens. Because they do, and they are there. If your hate extends to the ones who claim to be "tolerant" but turn a blind eye to all that happens within their own religion, then yes, that is justified, and if that is the case, then I apologize for calling you a fundamentalist. If not, then well, I stand by what I said before.

So you are saying that people who actually do no evil themselves, are still not good enough if they don't act in the exact way you want them to act? And you don't see how that makes you your own kind of bigot? Riiiight.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about acting in the way Anon wants everyone to act, it's about acting in a basically decent way. I think - or I hope - that the point being made is that it is almost as harmful to ignore the presence of evil and not try to counter it, as it is to actually do something evil. No one has the right to complain about how a bad minority gives the rest of them a poor name when they're doing nothing to fix the fact that there is a bad minority. And with religions, a lot of time the bad minority are the people in charge, the people whose opinion is always front and centre.

An analogy: if you found out that a local club you belonged to was, say, discriminating against homosexuals, would you carry on supporting them and giving them your money? Would you continue to defend them against outsiders because you don't agree with that, it's just a bad minority who do?

Don't forget that media in many countries is owned by people who have a stake in keeping things the way they are, and which are more likely to endorse and report on the conservative end of any religion because of that. You may not have heard of the people who are religious who are defending views you agree with because the things they say wind up on the back pages of the newspaper if they get in there at all.

Go research at a few websites and look at organizations and think about whether or not you're asking for something that already exists.
