I've never met anyone with the last name White, Black, or Moore lol. I think it might just be on TV that those are popular.

Nah Moore's my mother's maiden name. Black's relatively common here (England), as are the rest of those examples. I think Smith is usually taken as the 'stereotypical' English surname, but I couldn't imagine what the American version of it is.

I can imagine that. I'm from the US though and I've never heard most of those last names outside of television programs.

Possibly Jones? I have heard that it's the most common name here; though I've not personally met anyone with that name as far as I know, you hear it used a lot as a generic name when people are just making one up. That or Johnson. It depends where you go, really. There are areas where certain ethnic groups are more common, so you get more of one kind of name there. But i think Jones or Johnson are probably the most stereotypical names.

Smith, Johnson, Jones seem to be pretty common.

Storytime: There was a guy at my church when I was a kid who had a particularly common name, but I didn't realize how common it was until one day I noticed a card he had accidentally left sitting on the pew when he got up:

"Member of the Jim Smith Society"

It was noted as having some ridiculously huge number of members, I think in the tens of thousands, maybe more. I laughed my butt off.

Although I would note: he was originally from Ireland.

Smith is considered really common in America.

It's actually the most common last name according the Census Bureau's list of top 1000 last names, with over 1% of the population being named Smith. Johnson is 2, Williams is 3, Jones is 4.

Stone is #158, and there are not enough Darlings in the USA to appear on the list.

I've met some Moores.

I've had several teachers with the last name Moore. Most common American last name I can think of is Kim-- but I grew up in a multicultural ethnic area. Patterson, Simon, and Stein were pretty common too.

I see a lot of those names cycle through the daycare at which I've worked for the past three years, along with the last name "Ward." Id say they're common enough.
