Religious teachings have created such a divide between people that you just can't remove the blame from it. Religion is the instigator, at times, of horrible crimes and even wars.
When you set the standards of what's good and what's evil, you'll have the 'good' fraction turn hostile against the 'evil' faction. Religion is not without blame. It fuels the ideas of bigots all over the world; it serves as a reason for them to act upon their bigotry; and as a mind-numbing narcotic to stop the followers from seeing and stopping the bigotry.

Uh, yeah. I'm in Asia, and non-religious homophobia runs rampant. Among other things, there's the belief that GLBT people are being unfilial / dishonoring their parents by not producing little kids / putting their own selfish interests ahead of that of their family or community etc.
