You have some lucky siblings. :) I plan on doing this for my future kids.

Better late than never!

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I plan on doing the same for my kids if I have them (minus the Harry Potter books. I like them but it never occurred to me to make sure that they were something my kids saw).

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really nice of you. :]

Holy run-on sentence, Batman!
Also, "a lot" =/= "alot".

Yeah, yeah I know, being unhelpful.

:] I think this is one of my favorite secrets so far (mostly because I'm still a huge The Lion King fan). Such a sweet older sibling. <3

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, dude! If we're experiencing fiction at the age it has most meaning? Quickly, go read Ender's Game before you get any older. And maybe read it or recommend it to your siblings when they're 10-12? The older you are, the less you believe the children's experience and thought process, but if you read it young you remember later that it made sense and was realistic to you when you were that age. Orson Scott Card wrote some other books, including a whole load of sequels to this that, as he gets older, try to undo more and more of what rang so true to me as a child.

I keep wanting to read Harry Potter (and Narnia) to my sister, but she aren't very interested. :c

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
How old is she? I got my brother into Narnia when he was about 10 by reading the beginning of Lion/Witch/Wardrobe to him while he played and pretended not to be listening :) Got him hooked, did the 'read a chapter to him at bedtime' thing for a while, always leaving him wanting more, until he picked a book up to keep going by himself :D He was never that fond of reading, but Narnia played an important role.

Harry Potter, I think people make a mistake in starting too young. The books grow up fast, and a younger child is either not going to get half the stuff in middle to later books, or (if they do) find it too much. If you're going to do a book a year, starting at about 10/11 is good. If you're going to read them in one binge, start older. Even reading Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix when I was a little older than Harry, there were all sorts of bits that didn't make emotional sense to me. I reread them a couple of years later, and it made so much more sense. And the death in Goblet of Fire is horrible, whereas at the time I didn't think it was a big deal. Everyone is different, obviously, but don't think she needs to hurry into these books.

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true. She's 10 soon, but I might have more luck once she is a little older. Although I imagine part of the problem with Narnia is I have all the books in one, so it looks like a LONG story. Even after I've explained that it isn't all one story, that might look daunting to a kid.

If I ever get around to Harry Potter, I probably won't be reading them to her in a binge, so about 11 might be the best.

Aww, I wish I had an older sibling like you. Nothing sucked more than never watching the 'typical' childrens movies, and always feeling left out whenever the kids at school talked about them or whenever they dressed up as them for dress-up days.

[identity profile] a-phoenixdragon.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is an awesome secret OP - I'm glad you love your siblings so!!

[identity profile] morgan52x.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
One of my friend's have never seen any of the "classic" Disney fims and she's 19 so I'm slowly introducing her to them.

It's great that you're doing this for your siblings :)

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucky siblings! I'm totally gonna be the lady on the street who does this for everyone whose parents forget to do it. <3

[identity profile] faye-naruse.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Do it, anon! :D

(Anonymous) 2011-04-01 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
nice, but don't forget to add some Studio Ghibli as well! <3
if you haven't heard of them they're a japaneese animation studio that's made some absolutely amazing movies! (whatever crazy stuff you've heard about japaneese cartoons, forget it! these guys are legit and really good at what they're doing!) some calls them the japanese equivalent to disney.
now I don't know your siblings age, but if they're rather young it might be good idea to start with either; My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service and/or Ponyo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Ghibli
if you scroll down you can find a list of their films (I also include Nausicaa of the walley of the wind on that list)

good luck and enjoy!

[identity profile] andromeda-2.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe show them some of Don Bluths movies as well? I recommend An American Tail, The Land Before Time and Anastasia.

Hope your siblings are enjoying the Disney movies :) and hope you can also find them enjoyable as well.
