I sort of see kink memes as a place where you drop a story idea (if you like your porn plotty) so that you could read other people's take on it. Posting a prompt while there's a huge chance you're going to write the story is, in my opinion, an indirect way to say to the writers "no matter what you can do what I've written is automatically better". It's very infuriating to start thinking about a prompt only to come back and see the author being all"changed my mind I'm writing it everyone go home".

But multiple fills are awesome!! Who says just because one person writes it another person can't write it too? I *love* it when that happens.

And just because you decide to take a shot at writing it doesn't mean you're telling *anyone* that your version of it is necessarily *better* -- that's a lot of assumption there.

If I leave a prompt and come back weeks later and find it unfilled? Then, the way I see it, it's fair game if I want to pick it up myself. No one else has, and it was my idea in the first place, so why not?

I know writers don't think that but that's how I've seen it and maybe some other people can see it this way too. Sure multiples fills are always awesome but you also says that it's your idea in the first place so it's kind of awkward when you write something while the person who prompted has already achieved what he/she wanted to do: turn his/her idea into a story.

For me it's more like "this desperately needs to exist, NOW, but I'm not sure I could do it justice/I'm pretty sure the kinkmeme anons could do it better/reading your own porn isn't as hot, so prompts away!" [later] "Oi, internet, if you're not going to help me out here I'll just write it myself, because this particular itch needs to be scratched SOMEHOW."

I've never written/requested on a kink meme, but I can imagine that requesting and then filling one's own prompt might be a way for people to get some stuff out of their system that they desperately want to write but don't want attached to their name. Or a chance for writers nervous about participating in fandom at large to stretch a little without being all "HAY GUISE MY NAME IS _____ AND HERE'S MY HARDCORE BDSM PORN. :D :D :D" It's probably a better idea to try to look for someone else's prompt to fill if you just want to try your hand at smut (I've seen a lot of prompt fillers pre-warning that it's their first time writing porn, or sometimes even fanfiction), but if you really can't find anything to work with, responding to yourself at least means that you're putting something out there that readers might find enjoyable.
