I disagree with this. I played the Japanese version first and I was disgusted even then. He belittled every woman he came across and half his "rules" had to point out what a man he was. And Mia was just as insipid about it.

Will never understand his appeal.

I'm saying, from my understanding, and from what my Japanese Friend Who Plays Videogames told me, he didn't really spark that reaction the Japanese fandom. Her opinion is that his behavior was not seen as sexist because the feminist movement there has been different in what's been focused on and so forth. I don't feel qualified to comment on that, but if it was due to culture clash, they should have localized him to however he was meant to be received. IIRC they did this with all the boob jokes re: Mia, which in Japan are kind of playful and silly but that in the West are gross and demeaning.

Well I know there are women here in the States that don't perceive him as sexist, either. Everyone has a different reaction to sexism based on their experiences. I think it would be an impossible task set on the localizers to try and merge general opinion on those kinds of things between the Eastern and Western fandoms.
