Don't base their looks on how good the movie is. The fact that they look ugly or scary is simply another nod to the movie itself, and they look so fantastically real it really makes the movie, among many other things.

Yes, but if their looks make me uncomfortable, is it really worth seeing? Maybe the fact that they look real is what freaks me out? I don't really want to see a movie about realistic looking rattlesnakes, as one example.

I would hope that after you start watching the looks don't matter so much to you because their characterization is more important. If you don't watch it that's up to you, but I loved it and thought it was amazing. Rattlesnake Jake was my favorite part of the entire movie, to be honest. Bill Nighy did an incredible job voicing him.
