(Anonymous) 2011-03-31 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)When I swear, I give a great deal of thought to what I am saying, and often there is no substitute that conveys precisely the meaning I want to convey. I grew up censuring my speech for religious reasons, and I can't tell you what a relief it is to be able to express myself without worrying about 'bad' words.
Example:
"Fuck me harder!"
sounds ever so much better in the circumstances as,
"Have sexual intercourse with me using more force!"
"He's an ass-kisser." has so much more impact than,
"He's a buttocks-kisser."
"That's bullshit!"
Is so much more clear than,
"That's bull feces!"
And, "Dammit, Jim, what the hell's the matter with you!"
I somehow don't think that, "Goodness! Jim, What is wrong?" Would have become the catchphrase for Trekkies that it has become.
Oh, and Shakespeare; " YOU ARE AN ASS!"
Somehow, I don't think that saying, "You are a donkey!" would have been as memorable.
