Who knows? I've been trying to figure that one out myself.
I think it comes from the attitude that some hipsters have about music where they are very condescending towards people who have "less refined" tastes and that elitist attitude resulted in the term "hipster" being used synonymously with "elitist" WHICH IS FUCKING STUPID AND ANNOYING

(Appropriate icon is appropriate.) I don't know about how inaccurate the label is. I'm from Seattle, and if there's two things Seattle is good at, they're being hipster and making fun of hipsters. (And raining.) A good friend of mine goes to Seattle University, which has a very dense hipster population, and it's an extremely alienating environment. There really is a lot of elitism. *shrugs* Irritating, too; it seems like 60% of the student smoke "ironically". Pro tip: lung cancer isn't ironic.

bah. Obviously I'm open to being convinced, but I've yet to meet a critical mass of hipsters I can tolerate.

Its not that its offensive, I was told its that hipsters come off as "I'm a snob and I'm cooler than you because you're all just sheep playing to the mainstream lifestyle while I'm being unique and original." But I've never met these so called "hipsters" and I don't really care if I do or not.

Well, frankly, that could be said about any group that acts different from the mainstream culture. Fans of rock look down on those who listen to pop, readers of genre literature think that they're so brave and different, vegans think they're better than omnivores etc. (yes, I know I'm generalizing. I'm sure there are perfectly nice and humble rockers, genre-readers and vegans).
