Sometimes it calls for it sometimes not. It depends on the person and all. Even with the made up stuff it all depends on the CHARACTER really. But there should generally be more swearing than there is if it happened in reality. Fact is 12 year olds usually swear like there's no tomorrow. I can see why it's not shown on kids shows or certain animation though (though sometimes in fanfic it can work). Though sometimes the made up words are just cringey.

That said I have a special place in my heart for "Monkey Feathers" in Avatar: TLA.

When it comes to canon these kids would never be shown to swear but would it be appropriate in fanfic on the basis of their characters? Or if say swear words were allowed on such shows?

Aang fits the making up silly phrases like he did in Fire Bending Masters and his motherfucker subditute makes sense- if only as how he was raised by monks probably means he'd have to watch his language (plus making up stuff would seem fun to him- it just utterly fits). He wouldn't care much about people swearing up a storm (after all he was well travelled before the ice-berg) he just... doesn't do it himself. So whatever.

Suki, Mai, Azula just... wouldn't swear. Can't see it somehow. For Azula there would be no point. She is ~above~ that in her eyes and can show her displeasure in a calm and creepy tone that almost means you wish she would swear and show she's actually HUMAN. Also generally not being raised like that (same with Zuko before banishment) it wouldn't be something she'd do.

Ty Lee might do so innocently or accidentally with some words like using them before knowing what they are. Though she may like Aang's word play.

Zuko in general could not swear without it sounding out of place to me. He's a ~prince~ and S1 (and part of s2) would feel it is ~beneath~ him and probably would subscribe to the silly idea that swearing is something only stupid people do (even though his temper is hardly appropriate of a prince either. But eh, you don't argue against that kind of BS with S1 Zuko!). Afterwards when he becomes a better person I still can't see him swearing. Or perhaps trying to attempt it once later- only for his friends the gaang to say it sounds weird and just doesn't fit (as well as sounding really forced). Even if he's on a boat for three years and travels... nah. Zuko tries so hard to be aloof and intimidating like his baby sis but he simply fails hard at it. Still not swearing is what he'd do. I can't see him being utterly chummy with the crew for a long time. Or people at docks and villages even disregarding his fire nation status in those cases.

I think Katara would perhaps disapprove of swearing on principle but has slip ups now and then. Say if the stress got really, really too much or she was really, really angry to the point of mania. It's a hard push maybe but it would have happened once on screen if allowed to do so I feel.

Sokka would have the odd swear bomb definitly. Katara would berate him over this at least in front of very small kids or certain company.

Toph would probably swear like a sailor.

Iroh is debateable to me. I actually could just see him not swearing for years in front of his nephew throughout the banishment and then dropping a swear word in to a conversation rather causally years after the war- with Zuko being shocked at this because he's never heard him do so before, it turning out Iroh had a bit of a potty mouth now and then in the military but he kept his mouth clean to prevent Zuko from picking up the habit of swearing from him like 'a lot of children do' (and heck maybe tried his best for the crew to follow this as best he could.)

But now he's "fine" so he can swear all the fuck he wants! Tea? :D

And YES. I can SO see Iroh doing that. Out of ALL the characters here, Iroh yes. XD And Toph.

Except for this part, really. I don't wish it at all. It would be OOC for her, period. Not only that, but there are those of us real human beings who don't swear; possibly hard to believe, but true, and it doesn't make us any less human. Unfortunate phrasing, perhaps, but I felt it needed addressing.

Still, I'd say you have the right idea here.

No offense, but you're kinda twisting Anon's words there. I don't think they were equating not swearing with being inhuman, and it wasn't unfortunate word choice either. It was a perfectly logical statement. Anon established that they felt like Azula wouldn't curse because it is beneath her, so it stands to reason that if something upset her enough to make her curse, it would be a loss of that sense of control and superiority. A crack in her carefully maintained persona. So, based on that argument, her cursing would humanize her.

(Although I wasn't anon). More or less nailed what I was trying to say here. It's not that people who don't swear aren't human but simply that yes she seems so perfectly in control all the time for most of the show until near the end- swearing would mean she'd 'lost' and remove her 'perfect' and cold and calculative image. She's more intimidating in the fact she wouldn't swear and simply state calmly all the ways you disappointed her. I mean someone who calmly talks about you being smashed up by the rocks of the tide is more terrifying than someone who shouts and yells and swears up a storm.

mentalguru's words? (She wasn't anon.) Well, that certainly wasn't my intent; I suppose I just misread, given her further explanation. Sorry if it came across that way. I guess I see what you're saying, although there are plenty of other ways to "humanize" a character, which they did through her breakdown.

But yeah it would be OOC for Azula that's th point. It's just if you were captive to her or she was in charge of you and were in trouble- her swearing would almost be a comfort.

The thing is with Azula as anon said below tries to be so cold, intimitating and 'perfect' all the time. Swearing as anon pointed out would mean if would seem she'd lack control which is not the impression she wants to give. Having someone like her perfectly in control all the time as she calmly talks about the ways you could die or get tortured is more scary than someone cursing and yelling in my face. So in a way you'd almost want her to swear in that position. Because it would feel like there's something to work from there.

For instance Aang used Zhao's temper against him- you really don't get much of the impression that's easy to do with Azula at all or it's even impossible until she goes nuts in the end.

So agree with you on Toph and Sokka. However I feel that Mai and Zuko would probably let one slip from time to time, even if on accident.
