You didn't miss the point, OP. The point (one of them) is that there will always be corruption, depravity, ignorance, and complacency, but every year things get just a little bit better in some small way. for example, I didn't have this gun last year

I think it'd be a cool future too. I hope that if it comes to be, someone like Spider will be there to shout everyone into not taking the bad shit lying down.

Well, it's not like it was a straight up dystopia. There are wonders, too, like Reservations, or the Mercury solar panels, or those nanotech cloud people, or the sheer maddening cultural profusion of the City. There are things about the future that are awful, but also things that are amazing-- or even beautiful. Kind of like the present!
