I have to agree. Inspiration automatically equals plagiarism these days. It's hard to be original, but at least some artists can pull it off by keeping 'unoriginal' exciting and fresh.

Bad example. Lady Gaga IS pretty much this generation's Madonna.

Nobody is comparing Lady Gaga to Sleater-Kinney, Joan Jet, Joan Biaz, Janis Joplin, or Beyonce or Janelle Monae. They're comparing her to the person who's schtick she's aping. Madonna's.

I think there is a difference between being inspired by and incorporating aspects of and flat out copying and stealing.

As for the Gaga/Madonna likeness, they have both been pretty open about it. Gaga has said that Madonna is a huge inspiration, and Madonna has said she is a-okay with Gaga's songs and everything.

Maybe you're right, inspiration is not plagiarism, but Gaga is indeed copying a lot of stuff, not only Madonna.
Nobody would care that much if her fans weren't that obsessive about her being "original" and "special".
She's not. Deal with it.

Yeah, she's totally ripping off Madonna (who ripped of Cyndi Lauper, but was more lucrative and therefore better than Lauper), and her style (which...it's not like she makes those outfits herself) is a rip off of Bjork and Grace Jones.

She's not original.

In fact, that "Born This Way" song sounds a lot like "Express Yourself."

But hey--she's getting paid. More power to her, I guess.
