I actually kind of agree (in the movie, at least---I haven't read the books). I mean, I love Mary Poppins, but Bert is a much more accessible character, for both the children and the audience. Also, he's the one who really gets Mr. Banks to see the error of his ways in the film. Nobody ever mentions that.

Bert! <3

I lol'd

I HAD THE BIGGEST CRUSH ON HIM! AND I STILL DO. oh my god look at those big blue eyes <3

But yeah, he was awesome. And I think he did help the kids a bit more than her, at least in the movie. In the books Mary Poppins was quite different imo. Still love both versions, though.

Agreed, I LOVE Burt

Bert was so sweet, and I totally agree that he was the biggest influence. Mary Poppins is a badass and all, but Bert just understands the kids and helps them out, which is what the kids really needed.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. Bert is wonderful.

[identity profile] starsimpulse.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
nothing to add. i totally agree.

I think Mary Poppins saved the children (she gave them something to look forward to and helped them find purpose) but it was Burt who saved the family. He was the one who showed Mr. Banks that family was more important and that it was okay to show your family that you loved them.

So. Yeah.

I agree

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's a great way to word it.

OT I haven't watched the movie since I was five or six, but I remember being very turned off by Mary Poppins's demeanor, she seemed very mean to me. Same with Willy Wonka. Like he seemed like he wanted the kids to fail? Like he was getting off on it or something? idk i should rewatch these movies.

That's what I loved about Willy Wonka when I was little. Under those smiles, those kind words, and that beautiful "Pure Imagination" song was a man who was...well...really fucked up.

[identity profile] comp-lady.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
That saccharine cruelty is what I loved about Willy Wonka!

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
This always bothered me too at a certain level, it wasn't that Mary Poppins didn't do a thing for them but Bert just struck me as having done a lot more.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Quite agree. Thought that was the point?
