I was afraid to play them too. And when I played SH2 (which was the first one I played) I slept with the lights on for two weeks and felt incredibly stupid.

But if just watching others play bothers you that much maybe you're better off not playing them. There are plenty of other good games out there...

[identity profile] nohaijiachi.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
When Sh2 was released, I was so impatient to play it I've finished it in one day (with the bad+ ending, lol) (aah, good old days when I could spent so much times in videogames...)

Worst night of my life. I swear. Even trying to remember what kind of nightmares I've had that night make me shiver (and it was YEARS ago!)

Still loving the first four Sh with all my heart, lol. These games are just so fascinating!

[identity profile] nohaijiachi.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel bad for you op D : Silent hill is my favourite games series ever, with Metal gear solid and pokemon (yep, it doesn't make sense XD)

Have you tried playing it in little sessions? I dunno, I hope you could find a way to play them without being too affected, because it worth the pain >_

[identity profile] orijinaru.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be more than happy to play one of the early Silent Hill games for you, OP. The awesomeness that is this series needs to be shared with everyone.

[identity profile] nohaijiachi.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaah your comment make me realize what an idiot I am! I've started this week a "Sh marathon" with my brother and my best friend, we had finished the first one yesterday and now we are playing Sh2 director's cut.
I should have filmed our gameplay, I am so stupid T_T

[identity profile] seathing.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way with Bioshock, OP. The best advice I can give you would be to play it for a few minutes at a time, take breaks if you get scared, and play some type of upbeat music in the background (if you don't mind it ruining the atmosphere). Playing during the day also helps.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Too bad the series went to shit with the 4th one.

[identity profile] nohaijiachi.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep... The 4th could be better, if they were not so lazy to use the same locations twice =_= but I still like the plot and the idea of the room with all that poltergeist things, though.
But really, after that... meh. It always sadden me to no end to see how this beautiful series goes to shit. And we lost Yamaoka music too. SH is definitively dead.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately I've played things since that are just as scary as, if not more than, the original three games.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...Such as? I've been gaming since I could walk, and I don't think I've played anything as scary as the original Silent Hill. It tops most survival horror game lists as well, so I can't be alone in that opinion. What beats it out in yours?

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Afraid of Monsters, for one!

Also large chunks of the Thief series, but especially the chapter titled "Robbing the Cradle," the designer of which specifically cited Silent Hill, Session 9 and House of Leaves as his influences. Thief is a primarily stealth-based series, but its fantasy steampunk setting allows for big chunks of horror: everything from haunted mines to a malevolent genius loci.

There's a few others, but those two examples are right off the top of my head. Afraid of Monsters especially is my current standard for scary. Too bad most people won't play it.

[identity profile] threeonetwo.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Won't play it? What's their reasoning?

...Thankfully, Yamaoka went with my favorite producer, and the music he's made thus far is great. Sadly no where close to the same genre, though. :

[identity profile] shinuhodo.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
actually some of us liked the fourth one

i also liked shattered memories
just in the interest of providing a balanced set of opinions

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, I've watched Let's Plays of pretty much all of the Silent Hills. I know what happens in pretty much all of them, all the little surprises, etc.

I am still terrified to play them through myself.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I booted up this game a couple of weeks ago and I JUST COULDN'T DO IT. I was too afraid to leave the bathroom, hahaha

someone who just finished her first SH game like 4 hours ago

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OP!
I was completely terrified when i started silent hill 3! I had to get my 21-year-old cousin to help me because i sucked so badly and was totally paralyzed with fear.
once i played a little more and got sorta good at it (also hi easy action mode), it wasn't nearly as scary. it got pretty fun and cool and intriguing. there are some segments in the game that are a PAIN IN THE ASS/REALLY UNPLEASANT but i am so glad i didn't just quit!
get someone to sit with you when you play, maybe? or consult gamefaqs for a guide that makes you feel less lost and confused. ha.
best of luck op!

[identity profile] freak-of-spade.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I second this! I get my mother to stay with me for moral support when I'm too terrified, and when that fails, my kid brother, who, being 10 years younger than I am, somehow has 10 times the amount of guts that I have.

[identity profile] freak-of-spade.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, honey, you're not alone! I love the Silent Hill games to effing bits and pieces, I think they are absolutely genius. I love the stories, the graphics, the characters, the concept, the music, everything, but I've only actually played SH2 and SH3. When I tried playing The Room and Homecoming, I ended up being too scared and watching all the cutscenes online instead...guts: I have none ;_;

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm too scared to play them on my own.

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I never got to finish SH2, but when I was playing it, I made a point to play during the day, spoil myself, and summon courage for each major part of the play through. I had to take many breaks and still there was this constant tension.

You are so not alone in this sentiment, it's the objective of the game to disturb you.

[identity profile] tamchronic.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I was like that too, when I first played SH2. I adore the game, it's one of my all-time favourites, but it took me months to complete because I was so terrified. I couldn't sleep for weeks after entering Wood Side for the first time and getting lost in that hellhole, and afterwards I refused to play alone or at night.

It's so worth it though, trust me. The fear fades after a while, you get used to it, and now I can play with no problems.

[identity profile] frothies.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
aww! there there. *sheldon-cooper-style of comfort*

i'm the same. haha! i am a lot more courageous now (because i do think of playing it by myself) but when it comes down to actual playing, i just let my friends control the joystick. XD

i'm a wimp. sorry. haha!

[identity profile] familyjules.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
My husband was always too scared to play them by himself and I am too terrible at video games to even attempt to play them. He was really relieved when I was willing to be in the room while he played. I ended up getting sucked into the story and I watched him play 2, 3, 4, and Shattered Memories. At one point I had a crazy dream because he would play late at the night so we had to stop playing before we went to bed. I also watched him play through Bioshock too.
