Yeah, this is why I don't do RPF. There never was a fourth wall in the first place, OP, and if you think otherwise you're delusional.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-02 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But the OP didn't say anything about RPF. She(?) said fanning over them felt awkward.

(There's a fair chance I'm misinterpreting your comment here; I'm assuming that the 'this is why I don't do RPF' and 'if you think otherwise you're delusional' statements are directly connected, but I suppose it's possible that you instead think fangirling a celebrity is inappropriate regardless of RPF-writing or not, or some other interpretation that I've missed. If I'm correct in assuming that you've assumed that the OP is an RPF writer, though, I'm just pointing out that that's not necessarily the case.

This is the world's least coherent comment. I'm dreadfully sorry. Being an occasional RPF writer myself, I think I opened the comment box with the intention of defending myself, realised I was indefensible and decided to instead defend the secretmaker, who might actually be innocent.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-04-02 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mention RPF in the secret, but after submitting it, I wondered if I should have brought that up as well.

Basically, I have mixed feelings about RPF in general, and a lot of it feels weird because even if no one in my family has confirmed that they know these people, I keep thinking to myself "But what if they do?" and get extremely afraid to even mention the movies/shows/bands to family members in case they bring up that they DO know the people involved. And even with fandoms involving celebrities who I'm certain nobody in my family knows, I can't help but think "But these people could also have friends and family who are into fandom! And they could be reading these stories right now! I can imagine how weird that must feel for them."

(Anonymous) 2011-04-03 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I should have been more specific, yeah. Stuff like this, the fact that they're real people, is why I don't do RPF. It feels so wrong to write things about real people, regardless of how famous they may be.

The fourth wall comes into it because I've seen a lot of people use the "well they're famous and I'll never meet them, so it's just like they're fictional characters anyway" argument. To me there is no "fourth wall," you can't put celebrities in a box like that.

To me being a fan of a celebrity feels somewhat awkward, but is completely acceptable, so I guess I'm with the OP there. I guess my comment was a bit off-topic really.

I am also somewhat incoherent, and I apologize. I am not very good at wording my arguments the way I want them to come out.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-04-03 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Your comment was not completely off-topic, as I actually did consider mentioning my thoughts on RPF in the secret itself but ended up not including them. (Read my response to the other poster for what I think)

So I'm actually a bit glad you mentioned it, as that gave me a reason to discuss it.

Some people, who know the actors, have trouble separating them from their characters when they read fanfiction about them. On a professional level they know it's not about them, but their characters, but on a purely personal level it's "Their friends they're describing."

[identity profile] heretherebefic.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thaaaat's pretty awkward. I would forever be afraid of meeting them at some family function and being utterly unable to stop myself from blurting out something like "I READ THIS FANFIC THE OTHER DAY WHERE A CHARACTER YOU PLAYED WAS HANDCUFFED TO A BED - I mean, great party, huh?"

[identity profile] halfpenny-press.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, okay true story: my friends got to meet the Phelps twins (Weasley twins in Harry Potter) and I opted out. But my in-fandom BFF did go, and I half-joking, half-seriously coached her through conversation that didn't include the phrase, "...this one time, I read a fic where Fred and George fucked Ginny. I didn't like it or anything...but I did read it." HILARIOUS.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-02 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Working in entertainment does that to you too. My bff and I have been lamenting our lost interest in fandom-related activities due to being on the other side of it, now. It's weird because I should feel like the luckiest fangirl alive to have the opportunity to interact with people who have shaped my life, but instead, I'm sort of sad because my fourth wall is crumbling gone. (First world problems, I know.)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-02 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Start watching anime or play video games or something. That way you wouldn't have to think about people you've met.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I've gotten into a few game-related fandoms before.
Unfortunately, those just aren't the ones that are interesting me the most at the moment.

[identity profile] ceylon-tae.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
News flash: actors are real people?

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I get fannish over characters, not faces. And if you pick characters from a book, well, anyone can take on the role!

[identity profile] disembodied-cat.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand, OP. I work in the animation industry and hear a lot more about the lives of my favorite artists .. or hear a lot more about the companies & their drama. It makes it super awkward when friends gush over people or the companies .. knowing they aren't always as super-awesome-perfect as they advertise themselves to be. :\
But it's less of a ... fandom thing I guess. It's just super awkward. >_>

(Anonymous) 2011-04-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So I guess that problem isn't limited to live-action/real-person fandoms.

[identity profile] disembodied-cat.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah - anything involving people that other people admire but don't know, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-02 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, OP--I actually feel really bad for you, like super bad. Ignoring the relation to fandom, people are always talking about celebs, and to get an uncomfortable feeling anytime you hear that? I don't know how you function in a crowd, seriously, because it would drive me nuts.

[identity profile] atlikarinca.livejournal.com 2011-04-02 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahah this reminds me of the time I found out my friend at school knew Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt (pff she even got a minor role in Megamind) and Sam Worthington.
We're in Australia too, so it's the ultimate FML moment lol.

But good lord OP, yours sounds way worse. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ah man, I know how you feel in a way. My brother was on a team in a sport where he got fans despite being pretty minor. It was so creepy when I would overhear the occasional woman talking about all the dirty things she'd like to do to him. My family lives in a town where we see big names in the sport all the time and I feel all kinds of secondhand embarassment when I see girls falling over themselves and asking for autographs.

It only took one time of thinking 'Can't those people see that these are normal people and they were previously having a lovely dinner before screaming fangirls ruined it?' before anime conventions were ruined for me because that was all I could think any time I heard a fangirl squeal. :(

(Anonymous) 2011-04-03 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm... yeah D:

The more I get to know some (internet) celebrities, the less I enjoy their work. For me, it's hard to separate them as PEOPLE from their WORK. This is a little different from your situation, but I totally get the fourth wall thing you're talkin' about.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-03 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering when internet celebrities would come into this, as they are more likely to end up interacting with fans.

Out of curiosity, by "internet celebrities" are you talking people who are in videos, or big names in fandom who are popular for their fics and drawings?

[identity profile] frothies.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't think i know anyone connected to anyone famous, but i could see where you're coming from.

sometimes (due to my fangirl stalking skills) i would find out stuff about my... err, "idol"? idk how to call it. and they would be a little personal, and i would actually feel awkward and uncomfortable. even if it's something that they have released themselves or have someone close to them reveal about him/her. because that's when it reminds me that... heh, they're real people, too. and it makes me feel silly because i know i'd never meet him or her but i get all sensitive when people go over-their-heads with personal information like those.

blah, not making sense, but yeah. i reiterate: i can sympathize. haha!
