I've always been afraid to be that kind of person: fall into a fantasy world where I actually believe I can claim a character. And then I'd get jealous and all.

Haven't yet, but still scared.

Anyway, maybe a gentle confrontation will help you in this situation? You don't have to say anything at all, I suppose. But maybe you could just tell her that you really miss telling her things.

i lost a friend over something like this. my fic had the characters' relationship develop into a consensual open relationship and she freaked. ya gotta watch out for the loonies in the bin who get overly attached to their fantasy love affairs.

You sound like a former friend of mine. She wrote a pretty canonically-straightlaced character in a poly relationship, wrote him bi though he wasn't in canon. She was a good writer, but the whole mess just felt completely OOC, and when I quietly stopped reading her fic(though we had plenty of other fandom interaction), she jumped on me for being prejudiced against poly pairings (I'm not) and homophobic (also not).

Fandom isn't all about your fic, you know.

That isn't even the issue here, though. The issue is that OP's friend is possessive of a fictional character and would freak out over any pairings.

Ah. See, I found the last line to be the most telling:

I miss being able to share my writing with her.

It's no different than if the OP wrote fic for a character the friend didn't like at all.
