Um, during these years he was, let's think... He was a Top Student, great sportsman, good and realiable friend... What an asshat, indeed! [insert sarcasm here]
And as far as I remember Snape was the ONLY person he used to bully. And I don't find it such a sin to bully Snape.
BESIDES James once saved Snape's life. And that happened aroud their third year, if I'm nt mistaken...
And Snape always was around the girl James fancied.
And Snape already was on the wrong path of a Death-Eater-Wannabe.
Now when I think about it... bullying Snape was kind of logical and not such a bad thing.

Well... no I don't think bullying Snape was a good thing to do, but James was a teenager, he was jealous of Snape and bullied him. That is logical, James train of thought, but otherwise, James was a good person. He didn't bully Peter, he counted him as a close friend. He never abandoned Remus when he found out Remus isn't exactly completely normal. He was just a little obsessed with a girl and acted stupidly about it, which I'm sure most boys do in their lifetime.

No, Anon. Just no. Bullying is bad no matter who it is getting bullied.

Also, taking a character's big flaw and saying "No, it's not a flaw, because he's only picking on the nasty kid"? That's kind of bullshit. (And for the record, I'm not saying you shouldn't like James. I like James. But he's still a bully.)

He was an ass to Snape, but Snape was using the Dark Arts and was hanging around wannabe Death Eaters. While I certainly don't condone his actions against Snape, I don't blame James for disliking Snape at all.

Not to mention, from what we know, James was only an ass to Snape. Everyone other character in the books has spoken highly of James, both as a teen and as an adult. It's easy to paint a bad picture of a person by looking at them through their enemy's eyes.

Agree. Basing our judgement of James on the view of only one and not very reliable Snape (who by the way would still hate James even if he was as sweet as a honey) - is wrong.
So far Snape is the only one who spoke bad of James - and people still prefer to trust his words, even when he proved to be a huge liar. Stupid in so many ways...
