It's the same thing as listening to any other instrumental music. Just because some song was made for a movie it doesn't mean it can't stand on it's own. And a lot of people really like to listen to instrumental music I'm one of them). Sometimes it can be because it just reminds them of something from the movie, but most of the time it's just because it's good music.
I think it all comes down to people's tastes in music.

Like, for example, as some people already pointed out in this thread, how can you not like to listen to Hans Zimmer, in or out of any context?
