don't be ashamed! I'm your age and I cried like a little bitch today when I finished Bioshock.

this isn't really directed to you, but I find it very, very strange that it's considered somewhat pathetic to cry over video games. I mean, you're involved with a game for at least ten hours or so, whereas movies consume only a few hours of your life. in a way, I think vidya-induced tears are far more sensible than those caused by films.

I completely agree. When you look at games like Pokemon (or Bioshock or Kingdom Hearts or any other long ass game*), you're looking at 10, 20, 30, 40+ hours learning about the characters and connecting with them. It only makes sense that the same emotional reactions one can get from movies (which only last ~2-2.5 hours, occasionally longer) or books (...okay admittedly, some books/book series can take that long to read). But no~ video games are only playtoys made for children, it is clearly impossible for them to induce any kind of emotions in people besides YAY THIS IS FUN. /hates current culture so much

*and by long, I mean games that last longer than movie/tv show tie in games - I was legit shocked when I was able to finish an Avatar the Last Airbender game in less than four hours.

Ugh for so many reasons. First the assumption that older people can't connect with games for kids, and the assumption that because something is made for kids somehow means that it has to be devoid of meaning or emotion.

Has that EVER been the case, in any culture anywhere at any time?

I have no idea, tbh. It's like, crying at Disney films = normal, but crying at a video game = you're an idiot and/or read too much into things. So much cognitive dissonance, I cannot fathom it. *rubs temples* I almost blame the fact that because they're labeled as video games, which makes a lot of people who aren't familiar with video games themselves dismiss them thinking all video games are along the lines of, say Pong or whatever and don't grasp how a game can have a storyline or memorable characters or what have you. :/
