Strictly speaking, in canon, the kids' race is undefined. The author has gone on record saying he hasn't really considered and doesn't care what race they are. The only thing they definitely aren't is black, and even that is presumably simply because it wouldn't match the china-white appearance they have.

If the kids seem white, it's just because they're generic and that's what you see genericness as. That or just the influence of the fanworks.
