I agree with you for the most part except this: Sharon Tate's murder happened in August 1969. The sexual assault happened in March 1977. That's eight years. I highly doubt Polanski's grief over Sharon or whatever was still clouding his mind.
He lost his pregnant wife to murder. I can't imagine that's something you get over ever. People always go on about how damaging rape is, and it is, but I'd imagine that losing your pregnant wife to a random, violent murder is just about as hard to get over (I say having experienced neither).
