I spent most of the movie uncertain of his gender and wishing he was a girl. :(
It would've been more interesting.

I actually thought he was a girl for most of the movie and was disappointed when I realized I was wrong.

Me too, minus the disappointment. I would have been fine with him either way, but I guess that's just my personal opinion.

Well, it's just because I thought it was an interesting representation of real attitudes that I see online. Women sometimes go incognito because men tend to be dicks to them in competitive games like the fighting thing, so I was excited to see that the player behind the male avatar was female.

He's still awesome, but I guess I was excited to see an androgynous female character who is physically powerful and computer smart. They don't turn up very often!

I haven't seen the movie yet but I the "androgynous female character who is physically powerful and computer smart" made me think of Ed from Cowboy Bebop, because that's her to like, a T, and I wasn't aware that that was a hard thing to find because of her. But mainly I was wondering if that's the sort of physically powerful you meant, the ability to fuck up her surroundings or other people, and not just brute strength? Because if you mean the latter, then yeah, I'd say that is pretty hard to find in fiction in any gender, lol.

Also, Dot Hack or .HACK, however you write it--I was under the impression that the main character was a girl playing as a boy. Am I wrong...?

You're not wrong, but it is IS actually still pretty much a rarity, and in this particular case, would've gone to great lengths to making a good movie great.

This movie relies a great deal on "traditional" values, almost to the point of being gross. It has a scene where ALL of the women are in the kitchen cooking and ALL of the men are in the other room saving the world! It would've really saved it had there just been one girl helping to save the world.
I agree with the above, too, it would've been a great commentary to have the greatest online fighter be a girl (who wouldn't have been able to compete as well in RL). Not to mention he spends most of the movie bucking those traditional values - what's one more?

It was the one thing that really kept me from loving this movie.

But a girl DID help save the world. Natsuki defeated the AI with that Hanafuda showdown. And she credited her grandmother for teaching the game so well.

Indeed! Which was what kept me from walking out and writing the movie off entirely. In fact, I recommend the movie to people when they ask me, overall it's quite good, and it DID kind of save it in the end. That's just really my one complaint, and I think they would've saved it if he'd been a girl instead...which is weird for me, because by and large, I don't care about gender.

But yes! I DO agree, I think it's a good movie, it's pretty much my only complaint, and I don't feel like people are wrong if they disagree, I just brought it up to explain where that point of view comes from.
