Honestly, a lot of Homestuck AU stuff is really frustrating to me. Most of it is a bland rehash of the canon premise with no changes except character traits and ships. A good AU should bring something new to the table with respect to either the characters or the universe, which most blood/species/gender/etcswap AUs (and most AUs in general, honestly) do not. The fact that there are so many AUs in this fandom in the first place kind of disappoints me as well, because there is so much left unexplored in the canon (many of the mechanics of the game itself, for one), and that potential is being left to molder by otherwise talented writers.

Admittedly I like to look at other people's swapped sprites and designs, but reading 'swap AU just bores the shit out of me.

... there is not a cap on the creativity available in Homestuck fandom. Some people writing AUs does not mean there are tangibly fewer fics exploring canon, just that there are people writing AUs.

You're correct; I spoke ineloquently in that regard. I think the abundance of AUs does indicate, though, a kind of disillusionment with the source material - as though the fandom has collectively decided that it has nothing left to offer. Which, even ignoring the richness of the setting, is simply not true. Given that the source is, y'know, a webcomic. That (usually) updates daily.

Though I'm almost tempted to read such sentiment as a backlash against Hussie's jerkassitude. He's spent a hell of a lot of time stacking the deck against theorizers and fanficcers and being a general douche to his fanbase. Maybe everyone decided they were done playing by his rules and fucked right off back to their own sandboxes.

bluh I ramble.

I... I obviously cannot speak for all AU writers, but it isn't disillusionment that makes me develop bloodswaps; it's enchantment with the world and characters, and trying to find where one ends and one begins.

I'm not bored with canon.

I can't get enough of it.

Lemme just put on my AU journal here and theorise wildly till the cows come home~

In part, the abundance of AUs is because Homestuck is an incredibly character-driven story. I mean, one reason so much is left unexplored is because the mechanics are merely the background; it's the characters and their relationships that are really the important part. So yes, some people -are- going to rehash the canon premise with new characters, because it's not the premise that they are fans of, it's the characters. And if you're a character-fan, it's interesting to see/work out how those slightly changed personalities would mesh and how that would drive the story differently. Sure, some people do it better than others (there's a reason so little exists for this particular AU) but at the end of the day, it is pretty much always interesting to sit down and try to work out how a character ticks. And also to try and save your favourite character from their current unfortunate demise. *shrug*

Not to say that you have to like AUs, just providing my perspective on why actually, they're kinda cool to me.
