(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 02:15 am (UTC)(link)First of all, they don't know exactly what caused the bear's encephalitis. "Infection" is really only a guess. Second, the vet who performed the necropsy thought that it might have been going on for a while.
Now, I'm not an expert on bear biology. I do research on people. But there's a number of things that could have caused congenital encephalitis or an encephalitis-like condition. He could have been borne with a congenital virus, he could have been borne with a suppressed immune system that caused him to develop the bear equivalent of progressive leukoencephalopathy (if there is one), or he could have been infected with a tickborne disease. Fact is, animals abandon or sometimes kill their young all the time, and it's often because they sense something the matter with the animal.
So while we may never know the exact cause of the enceph that killed Knut, it's entirely possibly his mother knew there was something wrong with him when he was born and decided it wasn't worth the energy expenditure to feed and protect him. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's definitely possible.

When animals are in captivity, they experience a lot of stress, causing them to behave in ways that they wouldn't in the wild. Some species refuse to eat, for example. Mothers abandoning their offspring is common.
You're right that we might never know the exact cause of death. But I simply can't be convinced by saying that she "sensed" something. It's simply not enough for me, that's all.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 03:06 am (UTC)(link)You're right that animals in captivity can indeed behave differently because they often lack proper behavioral imprinting. In my zeal I forgot that Knut's mother was also a zoo animal. However, if you don't believe that animals can sometimes pretentious-airquote "sense" when their offspring are unfit, I think you should go back and read some literature. It's basically one hundred percent a certainty.

I don't like the word "sense" because it seems to allude to some sort of sixth sense phenomena. Of course animals can, for example, tell that their offspring smell different, if such were the case. But the word sense is not a good one because it's not precise and doesn't define anything. It's basically saying that they "just know", which is something that cannot be proven and therefore unscientific.
