Do you watch the news at all? These things should be showing on documentaries, panels and everything. Which country do you live in? I don't mean to be rude, but I'm just wondering how you could sound so...ignorant, or maybe you just don't these things. It baffles me, but I know I shouldn't be all that surprised.

If you reside in the US and want to know more about this, there's a great documentary called Waiting For Superman (don't anybody attack me for it) that depicts the stress for both parents and school children about their future.

I live in the US, but never had any connection the public schools. I wasn't allowed to hang out with anyone outside of my school or my dad's business partners.

I don't really watch the news, except for the stock report. I do use the Internet a lot, but again, I'm on the more "fun" parts of the Internet (like F!S! :P ), unless, again, I'm checking the financial news.

I think I have heard of that documentary, though- I wonder if it's on Netflix. Maybe I will check it out.

I wasn't allowed to hang out with anyone outside of my school or my dad's business partners.

That...That is horrifying. I do not mean this in any offensive way whatsoever, but just from that alone your dad sounds like the kind of overly controlling creep-parent who wants his children to become Just Like Him Or Else. And from what you've been saying, I really want to believe more than ever that you're a subtle troll because if all this stuff is real, then I'm a little sad but more terrified at the thought that this level of brainwashing still goes on unfettered.

The only fortunate thing is that you're still young and thus have an opportunity to correct these ridiculous misconceptions.

I am telling you the truth. I never thought of myself as brainwashed, I just thought I was getting a better education. My dad didn't want me around people who might distract me from my studies, that's why my social circle was limited to his business partners, their kids, and my classmates.

He really wasn't all that controlling, though- I was pretty much allowed to go wherever I wanted, as long as I took my cell phone with me and showed him what I bought while I was out, and as long as it didn't interfere with my studies. Before I could drive I'd take a taxi out and it wouldn't be a problem. We went on vacation relatively often, too- it's not like I was locked in the basement all the time.

Ah-huh....

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Aahh! Overplayed your hand, anon.

Ladies and gents, I do believe we have arguably the greatest troll ever to trawl these waters, and my goodness, that's saying something because we've had some fine, fine trollin' done here.

You've really been groomed to be a high-end muckity-muck all your life...and you don't keep up with the news? Uh. Huh. And none of these fancy-schmancy nameless school taught by "them" encourage you to do so? And you've never once thought: "Hey, if I'm going to be an effective leader of giant companies, it might be a good idea to know what's going on!" No sir, I don't buy it. I don't even buy the idea that a school would literally just enforce the bottom-line idea without at least teaching you the basic concepts of human nature and how to exploit it. Because if this were for real, you'd basically have all the humanity of a rock and everyone around you would know it, and one way or another, you'd never be able to get off the ground. It'd creep too many people out and folks just plain wouldn't trust you, because you'd either be a sociopath or an imbecile. A literal one, I mean.

Fortunately for you, that is not the case, because folks, I do believe we just got trolled. I tip my hat, sir.

Or it's a social experiment.

I was thinking something along this conspiracy too... Someone's testing us.

Alright, alright, you caught me.

About 75% of what I said really is true- I did go to a private school focusing on economics, I really wasn't allowed to hang out with anyone outside of my school/my dad's business partners, and I really was raised to focus on the bottom line. I was taken to the NYSE as a child and told that I'd be there one day. My school really did have only classes that could be useful in the business world. I actually am an economics student. All of this is actually true.

But people seemed so shocked when I mentioned my upbringing, it was kind of funny. Obviously you've never run into someone with my upbringing before, and it was kind of funny. I was also really bored. You all thought I was a "brainwashed corporate drone," so I played it up.

I'm really not that far out of the loop, I swear.

And I'm sorry. I probably took it too far.

(also, Captcha is "insurance nasty"- kinda ironic, there)

But what about your first statement? It sounds like you really believe that. Or was it all a ruse the whole time?

But, whoa. Amazing job, darlin. We all were horrified for a moment there.

Heh, thanks, I tried.

And yes, my first statement actually was serious. It was the reaction to that really surprised me.

Has this discussion somewhat changed your mind? A little? Because, trust me, money should be used as a tool, but people let it consume who they are.

A bit, maybe. But it is hard to reverse twenty years of programming in a night (and I'm also kind of falling asleep at the keyboard, so I'm going to sleep after this). And while I'm actually nowhere near as extreme as I made myself out to be here, the core of it really is (was? I don't even know anymore, you guys screwed with my head as much as I screwed with yours) pretty much the same.

It's definitely given me something to think about.

Nah, you were good, man. Not gonna lie, you had us going pretty good. Yeah, this was actually a pretty fun way to kill a couple of hours (my father's a lawyer--I grew up thinking that arguing was some kind of sport that I just never win). You played it up good--ridiculous, but with just that hint that earnest confusion. I bit. We all bit. Well played, anon. Well played.
