Wait, what? What's the context here? It doesn't sound like he was saying he'd do that to someone...IDGI.

HAve you checked back on this secret? I responded (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/666590.html?thread=425836766#t425836766) to the secret. The tweets in the secret are related to an exchange of tweets by "papalani" and "katieiero" and I don't know what to make of that, haha. "papalani" seems to be a feminist critiquing G.Way, but I'm not sure. I haven't looked at all of "papalani"'s tweets.

I looked at all of papalani's tweets and they are one of those fans that responds to every post of celebrity they're following. I think gway just had enough. However, he could have just blocked them.

Context!

Gerard Way called a teen girl online a cunt.

Then updated his twitter prof. to say something like, "Not afraid to call a 16 year old girl a cunt."

Papalani then called him out on using misogynist language (saying something to the effect that he wasn't afraid to be ~edgy~ by dropping the c-bomb, but sure as hell would never call anyone...say, the n-word), and said basically, "Would you like some rockstar calling your daughter that in 16 years?"

Then G-Way said he'd punch her face in. Cause, you know, that is a totally thoughtful way to respond to a pretty legitimate criticism and valid point.

THEN Lexi called him out on saying that he'd physically assault a lady (a lady who, hilariously enough, was criticizing his misogynistic behavior), and then he said he'd physically assault HER.

And at the end of the day, I was disappoint.

...Wow. OK, yep, pretty douchey. And here I was trying not to judge him/that band as just a bunch of emo posers who were trying too hard (hey, I loved Good Charlotte when I was a teenager; I can't hate). But that is just ridiculous.

What's even more depressing (to me) is the fact that a lot of his fans are either a) changing the context, or b) hyperbolizing (which I just made up...) to make it seem like poor Gerard was just so put upon by these nasty fans and wasn't he justified by calling them cunts and threatening physical violence? He had just had enough!

When, like, papalani had...four tweets to him? CLEARLY SHE WAS HARASSING HIM. Except...she was speaking out about the fact that it's bullshit that he, a grown ass man, would call a 16 year old girl a cunt?

...WHAT A BITCH!

Blech.

First off... Am I an obsessive fan who's going to be all OMG YOU DARE DEFILE THE NAME OF GERARD WAY???!!! No. I'm just going to play Devil's Advocate here.

The teen he called a cunt? From what I can see had pretty much created a twitter to hassle him and his wife. For months, I believe.

And then he'd had enough, so he retaliated. Did he retaliate in a particularly useful way? No. Do I condone the use of the word cunt or any other misogynistic language? No.

But think of it like this... If that was a student from (insert state here) or an office worker from (insert state here), I very much doubt you'd be jumping on their backs because they retaliated to months of taunting the wrong way. You'd be jumping to their defence because they are the victims of cyberbullying.

But because this is Gerard Way and he is in the public eye, he's either a GOLDEN SAINT WHO DOES NO WRONG, YOU HATER, SO FUCK OFF or he's a MISOGYNISTIC ASSHOLE BASTARD WHO LIKES TO CALL LITTLE GIRLS CUNTS AND LAUGH LIKE SATAN. There's no happy medium. The guy is not perfect, he's human. He fucks up like the rest of us. He's just got a fuckload more people watching when he does.

And by the teen he called a cunt? I don't mean papalani. There was a whole entire conversation with someone else who pretty much existed on twitter to hate on, not just My Chemical Romance, but other bands of that ilk before papalani jumped into it.

I took a look at that a while ago. Lexi's tweet was in response to this tweet (http://twitter.com/papalani/status/48760948047089664) to which he responded with this (http://twitter.com/gerardway/status/48889883950981120).

"papalani" was responding to "katieiero" so my thought is that Way was defending "katie"???

I don't think he was being serious, though, about the smashing face thing.

I'll shut up now. I don't want to get into a fight. I'm a huge fan but I'm not invested in the band enough to really get into debates like this.

It helps to look at the tweets of "papalani" and "katieiero" to see what was going on, though. They don't make a lot of tweets it looks like so it's easy to follow their exchange.

If that's the actual context, then...I really don't see how this has anything to do with feminism. It sounds like a really obnoxious person pushing someone else to the brink of, "dammit, shut up OR I WILL PUNCH YOU."

Again, in case you missed it the first few times, the conflict is between a 16 year old girl and a 30 year old man.

I kind of want to know the whole story. I've been trying to look it up but I'm mainly seeing tumblr posts, and, well, I have a hard time navigating it. ._.

K, first thought: the idea that you shouldn't hit girls because "THEY'RE GIRLS" is itself part of a sexist construct. Second thought: 16 year old girls are fucking annoying. Actually, 16 year olds in general tend to be annoying.

I still wouldn't threaten to punch out a sixteen-year-old of either gender, though, especially if I was a celebrity, and especially online. You just know people are going to jump all over you for it.

That's my thought too. There's a difference between "a threat against a female because they're female" and "a threat against a person who happens to be female", and I wish more people would remember that.

My thoughts too. I'm female, but I'd actually be more offended if a guy refused to hit me in a situation in which he would have hit a man. Also slightly relieved about not being hit, but I don't believe the two are mutually exclusive ...

Because he (and MCR) was the epitome of feminist thought and action before? I know they paid lip service, but I'm having trouble understanding where people thought they were good allies.

If judging musicians by their lyrics is still a "thing" then...yeah...I don't see it. Victim-blaming, misogyny, slut-shaming, obsessive stalking...in a tone that is a mix of shameless bragging and "Awe poor me!" self-flagellation.
