Only in the films. The films completely skewed Denethor, and in a way that sods up the point Tolkien was making in the book to a ridiculous degree. Faramir is a great role-model. But Denethor was a man as equally gifted and noble as Aragorn, fighting a war he couldn't win for over sixty years of his life. In the end, he cracked because he thought his city was falling, and he didn't have his best commander to rally his troops. The films over-simplify and make Denethor into some terrible bad father. He wasn't. And that's what makes the pyre scene so much worse.

This! Thank you so much. I find myself having to defend Denethor constantly, and he wasn't even one of my favorite characters. He's one of them now.

He certainly is mine. And the films drive me insane in that regard. I can't really watch RotK because of how badly they botch what was happening in Minas Tirith in the books. Aragorn consistently drives me crazy -- here's a guy who served with Denethor when he was a young soldier in the field under an assumed name, completely stole the show, Ecthelion was totally besotted with him, and then "Thorongil" buggered off when the Gondorian army needed him. And then he shows up, and everyone's chuffed about it, where Denethor had faithfully been there the entire time, keeping the city together under constant warfare for his entire life, losing his wife and his eldest son to the Shadow, and he's just supposed to stand aside and be thrilled? I have a lot of sympathy for him, for what he had to do, for the sheer willpower and endurance it took to stand against Mordor for so long, to use the palantir and not be corrupted by it, to keep a society going that had known nothing but war for generations. He became grim when he lost Finduilas, he didn't lose his mind, and the palantir use aged him, but again, it didn't make him lose his mind. At the end, when it looked like Gondor was overrun, when everything seemed to be crumbling, the choice he made was to make sure Mordor didn't get his body to desecrate, his or Faramir's. If they had, what would that have done to the people who remained? It was a choice with some logic to it, if one takes into consideration everything that was happening and his experiences.

...yeah, you pretty much hit it right on the head. Denethor really is a much stronger character than anyone gives him credit for and yeah, he's flawed, but not nearly to the extent that everyone thinks he is. I really love the Gondorians in general simply because they're all so human, and even as a kid they seemed a lot more real to me than most of the other characters.
