Actually, not so much.
There's movie!Toad, where he's a snarky, competent martial artist (takes out all the X-men, would've won but didn't know about Storm's claustrophobia. Whoops).
There's ultimate!Toad, where he's snarky, best buddies with Cyclops (apparently), reasonably effective, and ends the series as the gym teacher at Xavier Institute.
There's evo!Toad, where he's a mouthy, twitchy teenager, more hyperactive weasel than toady, with a hopeless puppy-crush on Wanda (that even leads to him doing some heroic-ish things).
Countless? Eh, not so much. There's a handful more, here and there, in some less-known one-shots. 1602's Toad is a toady, but the one with Nate in X-man was apparently an actor/scholar. There's a lot of different versions. What stays consistent isn't so much that he's a toady, but that he's an eternal loser. That's an adorable sort of pathos to him, really.
