Because they keep falling down and getting back up again. Because they typically dress like a cross between Ziggy Stardust and an Easter egg gone horribly wrong, but don't care. Because typically their life goals are so particular and off-the-wall (POLLUTE THE GREAT LAKES WITH MY INSIDIOUS TOXINATOR! TAKE OVER THE WORLD USING TIME-TRAVEL AND KETCHUP! GET ME PICTURES OF THAT DAMN SPIDER-MAN! WE ARE THE MISFITS, OUR SONGS ARE BETTER; WE ARE THE MISFITS, WE'RE GONNA GET HER!) that I have to admire their ability to identify and to follow their bliss.

Ironically, I had a conversation on FS about how I usually don't like villainous characters, because I empathize too much with the heroes. The exception to this, I guess, are the villainous losers. The cooler and more true-to-life a villain seems, the less fun they are for me and the more I want them to get a damn grip.

As for budding sociopaths, hmmm... honestly, I think bad people are just as likely to identify with heroic protagonists as good people are to identify with villainous characters. Forgive me for separating people into those two groups for the sake of a point; I know most people fall somewhere in between. But I think most "bad" people don't think of themselves as bad, and could very well rationalize their misdeeds as heroic. I was bullied in school, and I remember how kids used to pretend to be Power Rangers while they beat me up. So judging someone's potential for evil through which characters they're inspired by doesn't seem very effective, imo.

I could maybe see them be inspiring on their fashion choices. But unless your goal is to try and fail, then they're still not life-goal go-to people. Especially since the reason why they fail is underestimating their opponents or just being kind of dumb. And I mean true villains who are clearly doing wrong, not people who the heroes foil because they can.

Well, I guess it's a good thing that sociopaths aren't necessarily bullies and vice versa then. Because sociopaths are very clear that their misdeeds are in fact misdeeds and that everyone else will see their actions as misdeeds, but they don't care. They wouldn't be likely to sympathize with people who do things for others. I think that's why I did say bad people to begin with.

Meadowphoenix: But unless your goal is to try and fail...

In Doctor Horrible, Billy fails threw-out the entire thing, but you still want him to win.

It is better to try and fail then to have never tryed at all.

He's not the villain, however.
