Agreed. He's why I couldn't stand watching the show anymore. He just too much of an unlikeable asshole for me to overlook or ignore. Which is too bad, since everyone else is pretty awesome.

Somewhat agreed except I feel that way about Danny. And while I like Steve, I think he's the biggest Gary Stu ever.

As someone who overly identifies with Danny, this makes me sad. Because I get it, so much, why he's drawn to him. Yeah, sure, if I ever met a Steve, aloud I would be, "WTF. YOU'RE RUINING MY LIFE. YOU CRAZY ASSHAT. >:[" as well, but secretly loving it.

I'm much the same way as Danny is; I'm very overprotective of my kid and unwilling to step outside of my comfort zone. I would hate someone like Steve, because he would push me outside of what I'm comfortable with and, in many ways, that's what I need.

Not saying that everything Steve does it right, but I think that he is ultimately good for Danny (In either a friendship or a romantic sense, however you want to interpret their relationship) and I think Danny knows it.

I don't think Steve is an asshole by any means; I think he's just quite a bit socially-defunct and often able to step away from this By-Any-Means-Necessary-Navy-SEAL-mode that he has going on in his head. I think it's easy to see though how much he genuinely cares for people though and how he tries his best to show it.

I pretty much agree w/ your whole post (though I'm more a Danny/Steve lovechild than just Danny), especially how you summed up Steve.

I think that's just you making excuses for his asshole behavior. Assholes can genuinely care for people, doesn't make their other actions or behaviors any less assholish.

And, I think people can like jerky characters. Example: I love House, but I fully admit that he's a jerk with occasional sweetness. You can identify with and love a character and still admit that they have flaws.

Hmmm. Well, I think it depends on what you consider the definition of an asshole. (I realize the humor in this statement, but let's carry on.) For me, when I refer to someone as an "asshole" I mean that they are unkind in their behaviour intentionally. I don't consider people who have good intentions but poor execution "assholes". Apparently we disagree about this though. *shrug* I see House as different, as he intends to intentionally hurt people with the things he says.

Oh, I definitely admit that he has flaws, don't get me wrong. Like I said, socially defunct and views situations incorrectly, thus doesn't always make the right decisions. But I just see him as a likable character and not an asshole despite that.

I definitely can't fully appreciate or relate to characters unless they have flaws.

Ha! I felt exactly the same about him. At least for the first 10 or so episodes.
No, really, I had elaborate fantasies where Danny and others called him out on his asshatery.

Then I found a LJer who made long and squee-ful posts about Danny/Steve und Steve's puppy love. Which made me go o.O but after a while I just didn't hate him that much anymore. Strange how much a stranger's opinion can affect mine...
