Agreed. It's not that he's not, at least occasionally, entertaining. But if you're going to take someone who was introduced as the main antagonist for half a season, and redeem him, you actually have to, you know, make him grow and stuff. You can't have him be a romantic lead and still act like an asshole who rapes women and kills people whenever he likes (except when his stalking victim/love interest knows about it, because she wouldn't like it).

Redeemed, romantic hero. Asshole with great one liners, whom we love to hate. Pick one.

Yes. This. This is why I've been annoyed with Damon's storyline lately; it's like the writers want him to be the bad boy everyone loved in S1 and a redeemed hero, as you say. And it just isn't working. The personality traits that make each archetype palatable don't mesh well when forced into a single character, and Damon just ends up flopping back and forth episode to episode and it's getting kind of irritating. :(
