I'm a little surprised by the vitriol too, although it's been a while since I've been on F!S and that could totally be the problem there.

And now we have a lot more understanding of the world, so there's fewer extremely devout people in general (although there are still plenty, to be sure), but most of the "fiction" back in the day (i.e., stories, poems, songs, art) were based around those religious ideas/figures/'explanations' of natural phenomena, so now that we have literal understandings, we need other types of creative outlets and fantasy...

That's a good point. Back in the day, there were saints you were meant to look up to, or gods you were meant to sacrifice things to. Now the figures American culture looks up to are very, very different. It's more about surface than an inherent truth. Which isn't awful, it's just symptom of instant gratification thanks to technology.
