(Anonymous) 2011-04-13 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)There's a certain segment of the TV Tropes userbase that points to several recent changes (renaming some tropes, getting rid of Fetish Fuel, locking some flamebait pages, the adult-content wall) as evidence that the admins are trying to rob all the fun from the website and turn it into, as the first anon said, "wikipedia but more spiteful".
In my opinion, these folks are pretty thoroughly wrong. What the admins are trying to do is turn TVTropes from a place where 12-year-olds talk about how much The Last Airbender was OMGLOL EPIC FAIL HURR HURR and how much they want to have sex with Sonic the Hedgehog into what it should be: a website for impartially cataloguing pop-cultural phenomena in a light, informal tone. As for the adult content wall, it was a measure added in the keep the website from losing all its ad revenue that you literally only have to see once--no content was changed or removed. The changes are pissing off people who go the website to talk about how much the latest thing Doug Walker has made fun of SO TOTALLY SUX LOL and how they're a Magnificent Bastard because they broke 33 pencils, and honestly? We don't need 'em. There are other websites out there where you can do that.
As for forum drama? Well, there's been some. Popular yet trollish tropers get banned when they violate the rules one too many times. The much-trafficked yet flame-baity IJBM subforum was closed. But life and discourse goes on. This is not to say that the TV Tropes forum admins don't have their problems--when someone says something that offends others, they have a troubling tendency to ban those that get offended and are vocal about it rather than the offender--but it's not a 1984-style dystopia like some people say.

Other than that I totally agree with you, though.
