Yes, IA, Damon is so excused for his horrible behavior. But so is Stefan, it's just that most of Stefan's evil ways haven't been shown (only alluded to through dialogue) so it's not as obvious. I'd like to say that some of the reason it's "excusable" is because, well... they're vampires. They're supposed to be deranged, evil, and do evil things. The only problem is that humans are sympathizing with them (characters and viewers alike) and I think that is where the problem lies. Not the fact that they do it, but the fact that the show wants you to sympathize with them.

That being said, Damon is still my favorite character... some part of me always becomes extremely interested in the twisted/tortured souls. *shrug* And I don't think he is draining the show, either. He is funny, despite his douchebaggery. And there is a small part of him that is redeemable. And I say he is an exception and redeemable because he's a vampire, not a human, and I don't think they have the same standards.
