Long analogy is long.
There are people who have never heard of Star Trek.
There are people who have heard of Star Trek, but they thought the premise sounded stupid, so they never watched it.
There are people who watched Star Trek and just plain didn't like it (or had it shoved down their throats by an overzealous friend. "Okay, this episode is so cool because Kirk does this thing...!")
There are people who dislike scifi, enjoy mocking nerds. There are people who are Star Wars fans.
There are people who watched it and thought it was okay, but it didn't make much of an impact. They'll watch it every now and again, if it's on. (Say, Christmas and Easter.)
There are people who were totally into it when they were kids, but they kind of grew out of it. Maybe they still catch an episode, watch it with their kids, but it's kind of lost its magic.
There are Trekkies. We love Star Trek. We can quote episodes and trivia.
There are Trekkies who go to Cons in costume. There are Trekkies who join the local StarFleet group and do cool things. There are Trekkies who really make all their life about Star Trek.
...
And then, if you've seen the movie Trekkies, you know there's one very large, socially awkward man, dressed up as Counselor Troi, his lipstick smeared, trying to sing the Klingon war-poetry he wrote and forgetting his lyrics. And the rest of fandom kind of steps to the side and goes "Ah...we're not with him."
...
Sorry, that was longer and stupider than I remembered.

May I metaquote this?
