Lol, I can put a spoiler warning up in here if you want.

OMG YEESSSS. Those books. I remember discovering them in my library and thinking they looked like the stupidest things in the world but, heh, steampunk is hard to come by. I did not expect getting sucked in to this post-post-post apocalyptic crapsack world where everything is awesome yet horrible and Heeeeesssteeeeeerrrr!! <3______<3

I know Amazon has the entire collection for under 20 bucks but I agree, they are hard to find. SO HARD. It's a shame too, I think they are much more entertaining and have better female characters than say, the Hunger Games or whatever the kids are reading today. I would say keep trying as I personally think the books get better as they go. And the cast gets even more diverse and interesting, not to mention layered and the ending of the series is just...GUH.

I will warn you that the first book is probably the most light hearted. IT'S ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE FOLKS!

Yeah, one of the girls at a summer camp I went to had the first Protector of the Small book and I FELL IN LOVE with it. I managed to track down the rest and read other Pierce books as well! I love her, even though, like I said, some of her books don't hold my attention nearly as well. Although the Circle of Magic books I remember liking.

By not getting into did you mean not read or not interested? D:
Oh yeah, Melting Stones has been sitting on my shelf for six months now. I have yet to open it. ANd I *tried* so hard to read Bloodhound but I just couldn't get into it >____>

I also could never get into Alanna's stuff either haha. I think I read the first book in her series and I want to read the rest but, idk, something about them drives me off. WHich is sad because I love books like hers and her story is one of my favorite genre but IDK MAN

...did you ever read Ella Enchanted?

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
PROBABLY that would be a good idea, yes! xD

I had just been reading it as a fun, goofy adventure story that didn't make perfect sense and was a little silly a-and occasionally had sort of distressingly emotional parts and then suddenly the end and it was like being hit by a ton of supersad bricks but in a *good* way and ugh <3.

I definitely do want to read the rest! I-I'm a bit concerned, though, about the declining happiness, since I am a weepy, tender soul and I will probably cry everywhere. Ah well! It's totally worth it.

Well the last time I tried to read Protector of the Small I was a lot younger, and I didn't have the patience for it. I'm definitely going to try re-reading when I have the time, especially since quite a few people that I'm very fond of think it's brilliantly told.

Melting Stones wasn't... bad, exactly, just sort of faffy and vaguely OOC, imo. It makes a good quick read but I wasn't affected the way her other books have made me!

I've liked the Alanna books but in retrospect they're a little bit less amazing than I recall. I still get all sniffly at the end of the quartet, though. <3 <3 <3

YES I have read Ella Enchanted and Fairest and those short story fairy tale collections and The Two Princesses of Bamarre! I. I quite like Ms. Levine.

SPOILERS FOR THE BEST YA BOOKS EVAH~~~!

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahahahah. Yes, that is totally what the first book is like. And then everything goes to shit and it's like OH MY HEART WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME REEVE!?!? Yes, I think I cried when I read the wikipedia summary (I spoiled myself >__>) and it was TEARS nonstop towards the end. But I think one of the things I really like about those books is that one of their major themes is good triumphing, just not in the ways that we expect or happen immediately and the amount of SHIT you have to go through just might kill you. Or maybe it's the duality/comparison between the brutality/beauty of human nature. Idk, the themes are powerful and I feel even though you and I are fragile souls when it comes to literature, it's worth it.

Hahah, well, I'm sure it's not for everyone. I think the second book is kind of slow myself but Squire and Lady Knight are just epic. I think Squire is still one of my favorite books.

Oooh, that is a less than stellar review. Idk, I really liked the four main characters in the Circle books and then things got really sad and kind of depressing in the Circle Opens series and by the time Will of the Empress came along, everyone was kind of grumpy and pissy with each other and I was like, "WHERE DID THE PERFECT NAKAMA-RELATIONSHIP GO!?!?" because that's what I really enjoyed reading about. But it's Pierce and so I try to give everything she writes a chance.

ooh is it sad? Like I said, I keep wanting to read them but I've never been able to get past the first book. Oh that's right, her brother dies. Yeah, i didn't even read the books but that makes me sad. :(

Ooh gurl, Ella Enchanted is the stuff of dreams. It's probably my most favoritest interpretation of Cinderella ever because it is just so badass. I remember liking Fairest. That's the one with the half-troll chick right? Such a cool idea. And omg I thought I was the only one who read those books hahah. Idk if she's still writing in that world, it's been a while since I've looked her up.

Oh gosh, I was really blown away by the end because I-I... oh my god Bevis and katherine and then ALL OF LONDON and then I was just ;_____; but I had to cry quietly because I'm visiting relatives and stuck in a room with my brother, haha, and I had already stayed up ridiculously late just to finish the book.

I'll have to give it another go, then! I remember really liking the whole Chamber of the Ordeal sequence, in Squire, right?

Will of the Empress was a little bit tough to get through, but I didn't have much of a problem with it. Melting Stones just seemed sort of lifeless and I did not like Evvy's character in it much at all.

The Lioness quartet has... a bittersweet ending. Good triumphs, the surviving characters go on to rebuild their lives, etc. There's one or two moments that nearly kill me every time, though.

IKR they are the best! I thought the girl in Fairest was half-gnome, though? That's another one that I haven't read in awhile. I should really look up what Ms. Levine has been up to, since nearly all of her work is incredibly great.
