*yoinks this over*

Not meaning to sound snobby, but 10k as a lot? o_O

I'm not sure how your previous fandom could have been fewer than 5k unless you wrote, like, 1.5 stories total for it.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
mte. I don't mean to sound rude, but I'm not exactly a great writer and I've written about 10k words for the fandoms I care about the least.

Might just be the OP's writing style is minimalistic or something though.

[identity profile] prosodi.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like it honestly kind of depends, although maybe this speaks more to a style or different value system. 10K can be a lot to different people. I consider my most prolific moment in fandom to be when I was writing Iron Man fic and wrote something like eight or ten pieces - but even then the total word count is probably barely if not less than 10K.

And then sometimes it just FEELS like you're writing more for something even if it's not tied to word count, but rather a system of ideas. God knows I explored more creatively with my ten Iron Man fics than I probably ever did with my one Inception fic - even though the latter's length was twice as long as the cumulative total of the former.

BLAHBLABLAH, 10K can feel like a crapton of creative energy if that 10K is primarily composed of a bunch of different short pieces.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, some people are just really slow. I've sped up a bit in the last couple of years (still not exceeding 4k per month), but I can totally see where OP is coming from.

And anon, if you are doing it wrong, then so is Don Rosa. Some of us are fandom-oriented and have more fun working within estabilished works. As long as you don't want to make a job out of it (which Don Rosa did... and Moffat and RTD and a number of other people, but still, limited numbers), you're doing just fine.

[identity profile] heretherebefic.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think 10K is a pretty decent number if you've got mostly drabbles, ficlets, WIPs, etc. to your name.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
She might be exclusively a drabble/ficlet writer -- in which case 10 K is like 20-30 fics.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
100 if they're strict drabbles, which are hard to do.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
you don't know what you'd do without an internet cartoon?

maybe...get a life?

[identity profile] daniela-lynx.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Screw the haters, Anon. I'm glad you feel prolific! I consider myself a fairly good writer, and yet it's hard to me to produce a piece of more than 1000 words. 10k is fine *thumbs up*

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And I thought I was incredibly un-prolific for writing a couple thousand under 100k of fic in my life. Different perspectives, I guess.

(I've probably written about 75k of original stuff, though god knows how the comics factor in....)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get Homestuck. The link everyone gave me led to a strange pseudo-game with bad graphics of a stupid guy trying to nail a poster to the wall without arms. WTF? Where are the trolls?

[identity profile] kyoto-idol.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I…sorry, I shouldn't be laughing at this but. Sorta had the same thoughts when I started it a few months back.

At this point it's pretty long and takes a significant investment of both time and mental effort to get into, but all I can say is it's worth it…!

Homestuck (four kids) leads to Hivebent (twelve trolls). The first parts of the comic are pretty slow, but it does pick up after a while.

You pretty much need to be patient to read through; it's not everyone's cup of tea but yeah. Hope that helps, anon.

I'm glad that this fandom has your enthusiasm going. Though I tend to write much longer fics than you, I know what it's like to suddenly get that rush and find writing and ideas come easier. Whereas I might struggle and slave for months on a 10,000 word fic in a fandom I'm just not that interested in, in one I am, I can write a decent, 2000 word fic in a single hour long burst of inspiration.

[identity profile] getharion.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Homestuck is one of those things that makes me wonder if I should make a fan story for it or try to write it as an original. I have a basic idea for a story I want to tell, but it could probably work as an original story too, and as a rule of thumb people don't seem to really care about fantrolls... but if I write an original, it might never get noticed by anyone. :/

[identity profile] tamabonotchi.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
10k words? You better keep writing OP.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yet another fandom loser wasting their life.

If you can write like that, then for fuck's sake do something WORTHWHILE with your time instead of fangasming over a retarded webcomic. The author of Homestuck would turn their nose up at your in a second, because they actually bothered to take their creative tendencies and DO SOMETHING with them. Jesus.

WHY IS EVERYONE SAYING THIS IS OKAY, IT IS NOT, THIS PERSON IS DOOMED TO LIVE IN THEIR PARENT'S BASEMENT UNLESS THEY CHANGE.

[...] There is this seething passion for HS that is a self-organizing, autonomous entity unto itself, which is practically inaccessible to my understanding or involvement, even though I'm responsible for the content driving it. I've kept Homestuck's fire hot; its gaping furnace was hungry for coal so I got goddamn shoveling. But you have been responsible for breathing life into this monstrous organism which surrounds me, and now in its breadth transcends my work entirely. To thank you as a whole for this phenomenon almost doesn't sound rational. It's like thanking a furious thunderstorm for the deluge of rain it gave to your thirsty little box of poseys. My paltry utterance dissipates in the far deep rumbling. The clouds don't even notice I'm there because they're too busy swapping fan fiction. Maybe instead I'll offer something more significant than gratitude. Something more personal and experiential. I'll submit my amazement. You can't see me now, but it is a look of wonder and discovery. A boyish look of astonishment at something remarkable beyond words, like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, but on a more cosmic scale and more viscerally shocking. Like a squealing horrorterror's gruesome Cesarean birth. That is the look I have every time I disrupt the tunnel vision that keeps the work's bright sun searing my eyes. When they adjust to the dark, I see the silhouette in soft black focus of the young planet sized monster, chirping its affections. I offer it this look because it is all I have to give, with the exception of the tears streaming down my face. Its hunger is piqued at the fluid and my only regret is I can never possibly provide enough to nourish the orphan, now that it can never know the taste of its dead mother's heinous teatbrine.

Or...

Or I could just say thanks guys.

OH NOE I LIKE TO WRITE FANFICTION

*eyeroll here*

whatever. enjoy it, don't enjoy it. whatever strokes your rod. but don't act like you deserve a goddamn cookie for being 'speschul and uneeke' when you realize that you're writing fanfiction and not original.

way to be a rude little shitgoblin who fails reading comprehension. nice.

I am irrationally happy whenever a Homestuck secret secures the #13 spot. <3
