Sometimes characters are used as plot devices. And sometimes those characters are women. And unless the author is writing a horribly misogynistic stereotype of a character, that's OK.

Just because it's fan fiction doesn't mean the rules of good writing don't exist or shouldn't be in play.

but a lot of times it turns into "oh, that stupid GIRL, her bitchiness drove the male characters to realise their great MALE love for eachother"

nobody should have to point out what's wrong with that

word.

I think all kick-ass OCs get accused of being self-inserts and whatnot until proved otherwise, regardless of fandom. Any time the main focus is off the characters from the show it raises suspicions. After all, there are few things worse than reading a couple chapters into what you think will be a great story only to suddenly realize that the OC -is- a mary-sue, self-insert, or other fanfic boogieman.

I read a ton of crossovers and readers don't seem to be bothered by a female crossover character coming in to kick-ass in the SPN 'verse. I think readers have just been burned by Ocs too many times and we're gun-shy now.

This, very much so.
ext_19953: (it's just an object. (in SPAAAAACE))

FUCKING WORD TO THIS, especially the last part

I am still waiting/looking for a fic in which the Winchesters team up with Veronica Mars.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, my best friend actually wrote one, although it's not very long and focuses more on Logan/Veronica than the brothers. If you want to read it:

Here it is (http://sandbattles.livejournal.com/5203.html)
ext_19953: (introduce a little anarchy)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-04-18 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
SHIT YEAH I DO

still welcome, thank you!!

Word. If I had a penny for every lousy mary-sue OFC I've ever read, I'd be able to pay off the national debt. AND buy Microsoft.

Surprisingly, bad writing will garner complaints. If an original character doesn't feel authentic and organic, that is, if they exist solely as a plot device and yet are supposedly the canon cast's friend/former love interest/sibling/classmate/barkeeper at the bar they frequent, people will notice and say so. It's all about OCs fitting in with the cast, no matter their gender. It's really that simple.

Talk to #4, would you?

I love you poster, please have a chat with #4 and let him/her get a clue as to why some of us read fan fiction, and it ain't for the OCs or secondary characters.
