I think all kick-ass OCs get accused of being self-inserts and whatnot until proved otherwise, regardless of fandom. Any time the main focus is off the characters from the show it raises suspicions. After all, there are few things worse than reading a couple chapters into what you think will be a great story only to suddenly realize that the OC -is- a mary-sue, self-insert, or other fanfic boogieman.

I read a ton of crossovers and readers don't seem to be bothered by a female crossover character coming in to kick-ass in the SPN 'verse. I think readers have just been burned by Ocs too many times and we're gun-shy now.

I've found that that's how the SPN fangirls treat female characters in the actual show. I saw it in discussions on a FF.net forum I used to post on all the time, and it's also why Bela was killed off and Jo was written off (IMO, anyway). I agree, OP: I absolutely hate that attitude and it's one of the reasons I gave up the show.

It's bad enough the show and staff have a dodgy track record with female characters, but buying into fangirl complaints to get women killed off instead of y'know, improving the characters? Sucks on both ends.
Missouri and Ellen seemed to escape most hate because they were older women and not sex symbol enough to be seen as threats to love for the boys, yet I heard even Ellen was subject to a hate petition wanting her booted off (with Jo).

IA that OCs get a bad rap sometimes, but come on, not EVERYONE can think that. I've met way too many lovely, fun people in this fandom to believe that they're ALL judgmental. (And...you hate the entire fandom just because some people didn't like your fic? That sounds a little...immature. Sorry.)

In the Supernatural fandom only OFC or dead ones exist. The shows killed off everything without a Y chromosone years ago.

God, some parts of the fandom are nuts in their hatred of female characters. I LOVE them and wish there were more things about them. ONTD_SPNPARTY is a fun place to be if you haven't fully given up hope. Everyone's really nice and snarky, and they don't take everything so seriously.

It's not fun, it's hideously depressing, and only a complete moron or something completely ignorant of their own hypocrisy and internal biases would recommend a community like that to someone who already loathes this fandom. I think you're hanging out in the wrong parts of the fandom, OP. (also, like others have said, ALL OCs have a hard job proving themselves more than just author avatars and such, it's not just this fandom and it's not just the ladies)
