Speculation is nice and all, but don't just assume.

Case in point: The Expendables. You don't see anyone gushing about this movie, despite the generous amounts of eye-candy (YMMV).

Another case in point: The A-Team movie.
Look at the cast. Now look at the dead fandom.

but a lot of those guys were old and don't physically appeal to many in fandom. if some skinny pretty boy like Matthew Grey Gubler or JGG was in it, then i think there would be some people all over it.

Speak for yourself, many of my friends (who participate in different fandoms) found the male cast mouth-watering. Well okay, eleven friends liked the cast, but it's better than nothing.

Who cares if most of them were old? They were really good-looking for their age, they had abs, and half the time they were shirtless. Also didn't hurt that there were quite a lot of ho yay moments thrown in... (Still. Shitty movie is shitty.)

The point is, no matter how good looking people are involved in a movie, it doesn't mean the movie's going to be successful. Fan-service is a plus for many, but I'm optimistic enough to expect people to have better standards than that when it comes to actually liking a movie.

I'm still drooling over the Sly/Arnie/Bruce scene. I wish there was fic about the messy breakup that obviously happened to that threesome.

The expendables cast were too old. Just look at inception.

I don't think you can compare the two movies, since Inception was well-received by both fans and critics. It's like comparing tomatoes and apples.

But Inception wasn't hyped/popular because of it's mostly-male cast. It was mostly because of the ridiculous amounts of advertising and the fact that it was a Christopher Nolan film.

and on top of that it was a good execution of an interesting concept that can be enjoyed for reasons less shallow than the attractiveness of the cast.

But the reason inception has such an active fandom is because of the male cast.

Came here to say this.

My friend recently watched "The Eagle." She was in fandom for a record 12 hours before she came out and announced there was nothing about the characters that attracted her, and thus she was out.

It's really all about the characters, and not just if they kick ass. The audience needs to empathise with them, in order to make fic work. Otherwise, it gets boring really quickly.

... unless you make memes. Then I might join. Because apparently all I need in a fandom is memes
