NS2 So Full of Logic!Fail I Can't

*snort* First year soc/pysch class eh? Maybe you should have taken a logic class instead, because this is just begging the question. Or a philosophy class since written this with a view on how to live life that doesn't consider that there are others.

First of all, how do you know that fandom doesn't make some people better? What are you defining as a better person? No seriously. Because I consider more informed people better people and fandom will certainly make you get information than even being on the internet in general can't. A lot of forums outside fandom do not encourage general discussion at all; they just go straight to trolls and wankage. Your statement rests on an unstated, unproven assumption. Same general sentiment goes for your second sentence. There seems to be quite a bit of circular logic there.

Now on placing your happiness in external events. Um, this is what people do in real life. There's nothing to say that fandom people are doing to a more unhealthy extent than say people get from going out on the town, or spending time with friends. Actually human rely on friends for happiness significantly, being social creatures. Unless of course you're saying that people are inherently unhealthy, which could be valid but then makes this little rant of yours irrelevant.

Your second paragraph could be said about religion, and since there are more religious people than unreligious, they are standard and therefore normal. And therefore healthy since you've made another assumption that normal people are healthy (more circular logic). I'll agree with this though, since psychologists usually think the majority of people are sufficiently healthy. In addition there is a long history of humans beings getting attached to art. Why else is the Mona Lisa so popular or Leonardo even famous? As for fetish and paraphilia, how are you defining okay? Why is your definition of okay superior? Go to a philosophy class, please.

Important to whom? Their writing makes them important to their fans, so I would assume important would apply here. Again what qualifies as amazing writing? Amazing to who? Taken to it's logical conclusion there is no such thing as amazing writing, since someone might hate it. I also don't think you get the notion of celebrities and again humanities long association with it. By the way, I find Virgil to be a fucking amazing author who is better than and extremely derivative of Homer. He takes whole passages from the Iliad and puts them in the Aeneid. Whole fucking passages.

Unhealthy means it interferes with an individual's ability to live life alone in significant ways. That's it. If this isn't what's happening, then it's not unhealthy.

read some of the secrets that just don't agree with you are are in your fandom sometimes and tell me this again. I've been watching this community since its inception and I've seen the assload of crazy that oozes out of the secrets.

IF we are to take the secrets at face value and assume that they are for the most part true?

some people fit this to a T. they really are crazily, unhealthily obsessed with their fandom/characters.

hell, just watching people interact on those secrets that evoke nasty rage over a fandom/character in people is enough to convince me the secret op maker has a point.

That's fine, but my point still stands. You can't treat fandom as some irregular part of the human consciousness; there is again a long history of humanity's active participation in its literary/oral fictions. People get just as passionate about politics, religion, sports, food, parenting, etc. Academics are just as likely to argue stubbornly about their interpretations of literature. Feuding is actually quite common in science in fact. No one suggest that any of these people are fixated unhealthily.
